Beginner Langblr Masterpost
What’s up y’all, I just started truly focusing on my target language this month and a lot of the masterposts I’ve found so far are a couple years old and the links either don’t work or the info is outdated. For example, a lot of websites that used to be free are no longer free. So, this is my beginners masterpost based on resources/websites I’ve found in the past couple weeks!
I’ll come back and update this or make new ones as I go. I think it’ll be interesting to see how the resources I use change as I learn.
Grammar
Libro Libre Textbook
This is an open source textbook that’s free to download. It has 10 chapters and a lot of activities in each chapter.
I’m going to be doing a chapter a week as I work through the activities.
Also, for other language learners, this website is filled with open source textbooks for so many different languages and seems like a great resource if you need more learning resources.
SpanishDict
I know this one has been talked about on a tumblr a lot but it would be pretty remiss of me if I didn’t include it on the list.
Apart from being a fantastic dictionary it also has loads of articles on verbs, pronouns, adjectives and language basics which makes it a fantastic grammar resource.
conjuguemos
This is student learning website that has verb practice, vocab practice, grammar practice and listening activities. It’s free to use for students and you don’t have to make an account to use the website.
From what I’ve seen so far there are games, flashcards and “graded” practices.
The languages they offer are Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Korean, Italian and Latin.
Vocab
Duolingo
I doubt there’s anything I can say about duolingo that hasn’t already been said.
I personally am halfway through level one of Spanish and am taking a break from the site until I have a better grasp on the grammar aspect of the language.
Memrise
Similar to duo in that it’s a lot of memorization and doesn’t focus on the grammar at all, but it’s a lot more listening based which I find very helpful since that’s one of the areas I struggled in.
Moves at a completely different pace than duolingo does. You can pick between learning the Mexico or Spain dialect of Spanish. Offers a wide range of other languages as well.
Free to use, although there is a subscription service as well.
Mango Languages
This one does cost money (a wild amount of money) BUT it’s also offered for free through quite a lot of libraries, so I would definitely recommend checking and seeing if you can get free access.
The pace is very slow for me but it focuses on grammar and listening as well as vocab. There are also fun cultural facts in the powerpoints.
Anki
I have not used this one and probably will not use this one as it seems to be a flashcard system that’s highly intelligent. I personally am not really big on flashcards as a learning system.
It’s free to download though and from what I’ve seen you can either make your own flashcard decks or use ones that other people have already downloaded.
Writing
Lang-8
I haven’t used this website yet but the premise sounds amazing.
“A new language learning platform where native speakers correct what you write.”
Basically, you make an account, write posts in the language you’re learning and then native speakers will correct your writing. I’m not sure how active the communities on it are yet but I will update after using it.
Game Sites
clozemaster
“clozemaster is gamified language learning in context through mass exposure for learners of all levels. It aims to answer the question, "What should I do after Duolingo?" and provide a more sentence based and contextual learning experience to complement other language learning apps like Memrise and Anki.”
Free to use and they promise to always keep it free to use
