I really hate how brown parents with daughters are like "I raised you like a son" or "you're both our son and daughter". It roughly translates to "yeah other girls are being raised poorly by their parents but we're superior because we provide you with resources everyone generally just provides their male children and for that you're indebted to us your entire life".
No, we're enough as we are, we don't need an additional "son" tag to be deemed enough. Don't convince yourself that we're enough by calling us your sons. We're not some consolation human prizes. We deserve love. The world is already tough on us for no reason, and we are counting on your support, atleast. We are just your daughters and that's supposed to be enough but it's apparently not.
So here’s my first sew!
I made this without a pattern and wanted to use it to get started with sewing.
I started with a vision, a mid length summery skirt and walked into a fabric shop to get the fabric - I didn’t even know how much material I would need!
So off I went, watching numerous clips from other dressmakers online and freestyling with my machine.
This project taught me so much, how to wind a bobbin I was a complete beginner, the importance of sewing in a straight line and most importantly, that I can create a vision, this is exactly what I had in mind when I walked into the fabric store and embarked on my first project!
Lessons learned:
I hate button holes!! Look how perfect my first attempt went (after lots of practice goes). I managed to slit right through it when I tried to open it with a seam ripper and had to start again..
Be gentle with the seam ripper (I later found a hack with a pin which prevents that from happening)
I played around with the button sewing function on my sewing machine which sews on the button, it gives a much more secure hold than hand sewing
Darts - I put two darts in at the back to give the skirt shape. I naively thought that a skirt is just a piece of fabric sewn together somewhere with a waistband, maybe some gathering to attach the waistband.. I only later realised that I would have a shapeless mess if I didn’t use darts.
It’s okay to start again or go back a step and redo.. that’s what a seam ripper is for.. I redid the buttons and the waistband
Be confident with it. I saw this project as practice to get familiar with the machine and HOPEFULLY get a nice skirt out of it. Admittedly it doesn’t look like something sold in a fashion store but that doesn’t matter, if you go wrong you learn for next time!
Now to finish off the hem!
Let me know if you have any questions or are a beginner like me and would like any advice on getting started!
Found this documentary thingy about a man with the same eye condition I have (strabismus, the exotropia variety). I recommend taking a look, he really captured all that it really is perfectly. I think it’s really important that everyone learns about this kinda stuff, and how important it is for unimpaired people to adapt to others’ disabilities to make them feel comfortable. I, personally, had a successful surgery when I was about 5 to correct it. I remember always running into things beforehand because I really couldn’t tell whether or not I was beside, or in front of something. The surgery’s worn off at this point, but I’ve learned to “pull it back in” whenever my eye looks off to the side (it’s a very noticeable difference). I look “normal” on a day to day basis, but sometimes you’ll catch me offgaurd looking in two different directions. Just because I look normal most of the time, doesn’t mean I am. I am proud of my whale eyes. Happy disabled pride month, y’all <3
Dance alone in your room until it feels natural. Get comfortable in your skin so you know your body better. Teach your body what a safe space feels like.
