I was thinking about making a duo of ocs. They're insect themed superherores in the U.S. One is Puerto Rican and based off a firefly and I was conceptualizing the other based off the lantern fly. They're both college students in their civilian lives who one day awaken the power to turn into superheroes as a result of rare special DNA they have. And my intention was to showcase the distinct populations of the United States.

My worry is that knowing the lantern fly as an invasive species in the U.S I can't help but feel like making a Chinese character based off of it could send the wrong message about the character being some kind of "invader" and I'm wondering if I should rework the character (like base them off a different bug) or scrap them entirely. I sincerely hope I'm not being insensitive.

i noticed that immediately when reading your description too, while the lantern fly is native to China, the average American's reaction to the bug is an invasive species, and i would advise you to avoid the negative connotations you've realized. there are other awesome chinese bugs to base your oc off of!
