My Vodyanyk (an older male water spirit who controls the rusalkas and mavkas, the mermaid-like female spirits of mostly drowned girls) from a 17th century fantasy LARP on Ukrainian mythology materials that took place in Kharkiv last year.
Before this LARP, my partner*, and I discussed a concept of a visual novel based on Ukrainian myths but set in modern times and dealing with the theme of war. This LARP gave us a powerful motivation and inspiration boost and so now except for the novel we’re also doing our own LARP with this concept. I’ve decided that my character (as a master’s character it would be more for helping other players than for me playing myself) would actually be this exact Vodyanyk but 400 years later. I kinda got attached to this old dude from Khortytsya.
We’re doing a lot of research into Ukrainian mythology now and I’m having lots of fun. Maybe I should make a regular posting out of it.
* He’s on the last photo with me as Perelesnyk, a fire-related spirit who comes to women that grieve too much after their dead husbands, assume their form, sleep with the women and drain them of their life force.
Work in progress of the day!
