Chris Claremont's X-Men isn't even as three dimensional as the Stan Lee and Roy Thomas stuff in the ways where it counts. Bolivar Trask and Larry Trask are far more three dimensional characters then any of claremont's evil humans. Robert Kelly and William Stryker? Forgettable. Bolivar Trask and Larry Trask? Actually sympathetic in their craziness. Bolivar Trask and Larry Trask both end up sacrificing themselves to stop their creations, because they realize the madness of their hate. They realize it too late, but still. The Trask family is an interesting family. It's a tragic family, but it's also a family of crazed extremists who learn the error of their ways the hard way and then repent with sacrifice.
I can't see Claremont ever doing something that insightful. Chris Claremont decided Magneto should be sympathetic. Magneto. The guy who shot his daughter in the head, openly preaches about wanting an ethnostate for mutants, and abuses his henchmen in ways both verbal and physical. He also practiced eugenics to create new mutants in the savage land once. That guy is sympathetic? He's been trying to kill teenagers! He's hateful of anyone who's not a mutant, and even some mutants aren't good enough for him! Look how he treated toad. You're telling me to sympathize with that guy!? No. No, screw that.
Chris Claremont's X-Men truly sucks. All of it. From him ruining Jean Grey to him trying to whitewash the crazy terrorist that is Magneto. His X-Men all suck. The New Mutants are just as bad as the regular X-Men, because they're all tainted by his rot. Chris Claremont deserves compliments for some of his work, but he absolutely deserves condemnation for his X-Men. The only X-Men stuff I read after he shows up is crossovers the X-Men might have with other characters. I'm considering putting Marvel Team-Up annual #6 on my marvel reading list in my notes app, for example. But that's only because it stars Cloak and Dagger (not just the New Mutants) and also because Bill Mantlo wrote it.
Is Monet St Croix in Graymalkin?
Little bit embarrassing to have missed it in my review, but here we are. While Trask and Ellis are arguing about why murderous robot dogs were sicced on children, there's someone being moved/imprisoned in the background. They're wearing Monet's uniform and look exactly like her, so it's almost certainly her.
How TF did these chumps capture her, seriously? She won the superpower lottery. She's a flying brick with super strength, she's psychic, and she has her Penance form. Monet is also nobody's fool. None of the Sentinels we've seen would have a chance. Scurvy could probably do it from what we've seen but he's not exactly a field agent. It certainly makes Graymalkin look more competent, but it's an odd background event.
