Like aside from the white supremacy, misogyny, general aversion to critical analysis/primary sources etc - 9/11 truthers and similar conspiracy theorists just have this notion of government competence that I could never believe. I couldn't even entertain it.

I recently-ish lived in a boarding house with a hardcore truther (as he preferred to be called) and he was pretty clear eyed about believing in things that support his existing biases without proof beyond 'this one guy on YouTube said it.' The thing that got to me the most was the realisation that hyperfocusing on this shit makes him really unhappy. I mentioned so one day after enduring one of his tangents and he admitted that too.

Obviously I asked 'why on Earth do you still do it then?' and he said he didn't know. That's pretty relatable but incredibly sad.

If you could, how would you describe Charles relationship with humans? Since he does tend to act pretty passive towards them when it comes to mutants. Does he treat humans differently than mutants, his own people?

Hmm that's a tough one if only because he's been in publication for a long time, written by many hands. He also frequently doesn't say exactly what he means and speaks of humans very generally (except for the handful of elites he collaborates with.)

His forward facing relationship has been one of the kindly rational academic that struggles to actually engage people with his rhetoric. He was respected, or at least had a working relationship, with governments and government agencies - almost always through a dubious ally.

After Cassandra Nova outed him he held the title of least threatening mutant. The guy governments could work with, mostly. Even when he was on the outs with the X-Men institution he had a lot of legitimacy through the Avengers vouching for him.

He wasn't around a lot after AvX and became more of a symbol, especially compared to Scott or Magneto. He's always benefited from being compared to someone much more scary. I think he's genuine in seeing mutants and humans as equal, he's just not very good at recognising that most mutants don't have the wealth or other protections he does. Or he does know but is too committed to liberal ideals to change his thinking.

His whole mission of convincing humans mutants are okay by self policing and demonstrating heroism feels like a faith based ideology. He doesn't want to be an outsider yet he isolated himself and his students.

Generally he doesn't treat them differently though, even on Krakoa. He plays the geopolitics game, but he didn't actually believe in secession. Different groups of people are different and simply getting along is something we haven't come close to solving. Hence the faith. No matter what happens he doesn't really budge on that, ever, and now his relationship with humans is ruined. I'm not sure anyone with power actually believed in his dream tbh, it's hard to take seriously and it's not especially actionable. Appeals to common ground don't work when someone hates you.

Even in the devious and unethical ways he treats people equally. He'll mind wipe humans or mutants as needed if he thinks it's right. So yeah, I think he treats humans and mutants similarly and it's a marker of naivete. A refusal to challenge a nebulous dream he had as a young man and update it as the failures stack up.

Thanks for the ask and I hope that's helpful. I feel like I could write a thesis on the dude but it would take a long time to put all the different Charles Xaviers side by side and analyse them.

Something I forgot here that I think is really important about Charles Xavier is that he desperately wants to be loved, and it underpins everything he does. Unfortunately, he's not very good at it 😭. Chuck very rarely has relationships of equal power dynamics and you can see the difficulty he has navigating them, especially new ones or changes in existing relationships.

He lost both his parents quite young, ending up as the awkward third wheel in the very abusive Marko household. Not a lot of love there for a traumatized kid. There's not much on his early teens, but Xavier spent the next X years pursuing a frankly ridiculous amount of higher education. I would love to know what his relationships with his teachers there were like, but I suspect he modelled his own persona of 'The Professor' from various teachers - one of the few consistent sources of positive feedback he'd receive as a young man. You might even say teaching is his model for love, with all the power fuckery inherent to that.

(He was also in the army at some point, maybe deployed in Korea, but that's a downplayed aspect of the character recently.)

There are actually lots of people who sell stuff successfully on here, usually drop ship stuff.

They’re just not disclosing it as ads, which they are supposed to do, and instead it's marketed in a very Tumblr-esque way which can be summed up as “omg guys look how CUTE this is” followed by a different account underneath going “omg found it!!” and it links to a drop ship site with the item(s).

And the link usually has an affiliate tracker in it, which you may or may not be able to spot unless you’re familiar with them, which is also something you are legally supposed to disclose.

I used to get a lot of offers from around 2016-2020 to sell “moon lamps” on here, y’know those orb lights that look like a moon? Yeah. I was offered a higher kickback to make it look like I wasnt posting an add because these sellers know Tumblrites don’t like ads.

They wanted it to look as organic and hyped up as possible and then I’d just so happen to be like “omg you guys it's on sale” and post a link. Which is skeevy as shit and also illegal af in the US.

It’s like the insta/tiktok girlies saying “link in bio” to get around saying “here’s a product I make money on if you buy it” because they want to sound like your friend because people are more likely to impulse buy stuff if a “friend” is recommending something.

They’re also trusting that everyone knows “link in bio” means “affiliate link” which is technically not enough of a disclosure but whatever.

This is why I tag all my own book promos with “affiliate links” because depending on which storefront you buy Hunger Pangs from, I may get a kickback from the vender which I do to help mediate the fees I lose from distribution. It’s not much—literal pennies in some cases—but I’m still legally required to state it.

It’s also why when I do post products I use or like, I make a point of letting people know I’m not an affiliate and not sponsored because despite the legal ramifications these people are flirting with by not disclosing their affiliate status, I want to be fully transparent with my followers when it comes to me trying to sell them things.

Y’all keep my lights on by reading my work and through my ko-fi and patreon. I am not about to risk that trust for the sake of some shitty vibrator sales from a sketch-ass drop shipper who wants me to pretend I’m not selling you things.

So, yeah. People do successfully sell stuff on here. A lot of us small indie creators sell our own work all the time.

But there are also drop-ship sellers on here who get enough of a kick-back from affiliate links to make selling cutesy kitsch stuff worth their time on here. They’re just making sure you don’t know you’re being marketed to.

Do you think that Charles will start to be treated like how Scott was treated by the X-Men and other characters after Avengers vs. X-Men? Especially after the previous events with Krakoa and Orchis. 

Honestly? No, I don't think he will. I think it makes sense that he would be and I'd love to see him be held accountable for his actions (and be allowed to grow) - but I just don't see it happening.

Scott was treated especially poorly and thrown in a prison to die. It was baffling then and frankly it's baffling now. Once he broke out he was a pariah to the X-Men institution for killing Xavier (while possessed by the Phoenix due to The Avengers' meddling) though interestingly the other pariah mutants stuck with him and he achieved quite a lot of popularity with the general public. SHIELD hated him too but who cares what they think?

Xavier was also thrown in prison, though he went and stayed willingly on his own terms. He did much worse things than Scott ever did and his genius plan of martyring himself for mutants has backfired spectacularly. There isn't really a unified X-Men institution like there was in those days for him to be rejected by, and with the retcon of the Agnew it looks like they're setting him up for rehabilitation. Possibly rehabilitation through comic book death so he can be bought back in line with '97/the MCU.

Due to the scattered nature of the Post-Krakoan diaspora, I think people are going to have to make up their own minds about him. I don't see humans and human institutions/governments trusting him anytime soon, but realistically that just means The Avengers. Kitty and Scott have been the most vocal recently, though annoyingly nobody else had anything to say about it during Raid on Graymalkin. Logan could go either way despite trying to kill him in Uncanny X-Men #700, and Rogue doesn't seem to care about any of his misdeeds. It would make sense for Storm to want nothing to do with him as their relationship was poor even on Krakoa, but she's not really being written with the recent past in mind ATM.

He'll be doing a tour of all the books in X-Manhunt and I expect his reception will be mixed. I could speculate on every character currently in print but I don't think it'd be very accurate.

In short, no way.

The political opponents that have the centrist Democrats newly energized and willing to fight like hell are the democratic socialists who have become a powerful organizing force within their party and some of its most popular national figures.  That’s according to the New York Times, which reported yesterday that the centrist organization Third Way, in concert with unnamed “moderates,” plan to launch a “discrediting campaign” lasting from now until 2028 that takes aim at the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the group whose members include Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and is a key part of the coalition behind the party’s Senate candidate in Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed. That campaign will see Third Way not just do opposition research into DSA and target its elected officials but also go after politicians like El-Sayed, who don’t identify as socialists but make common cause with the group. “We are preparing for the next war that is coming,” Third Way’s president, Jonathan Cowan, told the Times about the campaign. This is a month after Cowan and Third Way’s executive vice president, Matt Bennett, warned in the Washington Post that DSA was “not a faction to be appeased,” urging the party to “fight” the group by pledging “money, organization, and spine.” It’s a well-worn joke at this point that Democratic centrists fight the Left harder than they fight the far right. But here, Third Way and whatever “moderates” are part of this effort are actually giving us an honest-to-God, real-life example of it: centrist Democrats’ big play to push back against Trump’s wrecking ball of a presidency was to literally do nothing. Third Way itself has been largely invisible, other than to make a list of words Democrats shouldn’t use, lead a public campaign against leftist streamer Hasan Piker, and tell Dems to be more hawkish. But now that the Left is winning elections, they are jumping into action, pledging to “fight” a “war” and calling on Democrats to show “spine.” You can’t make this stuff up.
