Did the laser surgery hurt? Asking for a friend.
LASIK surgery, to be specific - and no, it did not.
There were uncomfortable bits - the eyedrops pre-surgery stung a bit, and the contraption that keeps your eye open is uncomfortable, but it did not hurt. You don't feel the laser except as perhaps a little heat. I was a little sore right after the surgery, but not enough that I ever bothered taking the couple of pills they sent me home with just in case, and after that it just had a tendency to be dry for some months.
I still maintain that my biannual dentist visits are considerably more uncomfortable experiences than the eye surgery.
We use lasers everyday to scan our grocery items, perform eye surgery, play tag, and cut through metal.
Scientists in 1960 were pretty proud of this human-made invention, but turns out planets have been emitting lasers forever.
Laser Surgery went well. Just have to wear sunglasses for a while but they’re heart shaped so I don’t mind at all! 😎
So I just went and "beautified my face", which is basically having a laser shot at my face for five to ten minutes straight. Just light straight at my face. So long as I close my eyes, it shouldn't hurt, right?
WRONG. It's lasers, meaning it's very hot and my face is now numb. And it HURT when I tried to smile earlier.
Still, I could live with that. I mean, I've considered getting a tattoo, albeit a small one. What really bugs me is the reason why it happened.
Mum literally SIGNED ME UP WITHOUT SAYING I WAS GOING TO GET LASERED IN THE FACE. She thought I'd make the connection between "skin doctor" and "laser surgery", even though I've been to another skin doctor and he just gave me a bottle of ointment. Then she added I'm too young to decide and I'd want to do this later in life anyway because I'm a girl.
Okay, okay, hold up.
First off, I think it's already an issue she thought I'd realize I was going to have laser surgery by her saying "I'm taking you to the skin doctor's". Has the beauty industry already taken over to that extent?
Not the point I want to make though. What I want to address is "you're too young" and "you'll want to do this later", because I'm sorry, but do you have a time travel machine I don't know about?
I think at no point in my life will I want lasers aimed at me for five to ten minutes, thank you very much, for the reward of a few spots disappearing from my face.
Before you jump up my throat, I'm not saying there's anything inherently wrong with laser surgery. If you're willing to bear it for a prettier face, go for it. You do you. I'm just saying it's not my thing and I'm pretty sure it will never be.
And yes, maybe I will want it in the future, and maybe I AM too young to decide, but you do not know that.
And I'm not mad at her. Not entirely. She said it's for me to be able to find a job or partner easier. She was just doing what she thought was best for me.
BUT THAT. SHOULD. NOT. BE. A. CONTRIBUTING. FACTOR.
I bet if I were a boy, this wouldn't have happened. Instead, I would be judged because I "cry too easily" and I'm "too emotional".
Yeah. This isn't just about girls having to look pretty. This is about the problem that BOYS AND GIRLS ARE BEING VALUED BY DIFFERENT STANDARDS. Girls must be pretty, kind, and docile while boys must be tough, strong and the head of the house. Oh, and both of them must be straight.
There's nothing wrong with you fitting that description. But there's nothing wrong with being different from that description either. Like I said, you do you. And that's important. We shouldn't be asked, expected to fit into these sterotypes. THESE STEROTYPES SHOULD NOT BE THE ONLY WAY TO BE PRETTY.
I'm not discrediting how far we've come. Many people are starting to be more open-minded to such things. But the fact that this happened shows how far we have to go.
Perhaps I'm getting all worked up over nothing. Perhaps I'm overreacting. Perhaps I'm just angry I got lasered a bunch of times. Perhaps I'm just an "angsty teenager". Perhaps... wait, no. I know this post is going to get a lot of hate. But this is a networking site, so I think I have the right to say what's on my mind.
