An epilogue, and a new beginning
For the time being, I’ve had to unfollow all SW-centered blogs and block every keyword and tag related to Star Wars on all my social media. I loved the Mandalorian finale (thank goodness), but I can’t take half measures at this point. Seeing all the post-TROS takes on my dash is too much -- not because I don’t agree with most of them, but because I do, and I keep thinking about what could have been, what should have been. And I don’t want to keep thinking about it, because there are no more sequel trilogy movies to hope for, and no fixing what’s been done to the characters I loved. It’s all just scab-picking and wound-licking at this point, and if I keep doing that it’s never going to heal.
Yes, we got Bendemption and we got a Reylo kiss, and I’m glad, because I spent 9/10ths of TROS feeling horribly afraid that we wouldn’t get either. But it wasn’t enough to convince me that all the time and thought and emotional energy I invested in defending the Sequel Trilogy over the past four years, all the metas and tweets and comments I posted, all the spiteful and patronizing remarks I endured, was worth it. Because it wasn’t. And I deeply regret that not only did I put myself through all that, but I dragged others into it as well.
My faith in the unified vision and cooperative teamwork of the Lucasfilm directors and producers and Story Group, my belief that J.J. Abrams was better than his critics made him out to be, my expectation that the scriptwriting and editing process for these hugely anticipated multi billion-dollar movies must be at least as rigorous as the one I routinely go through as a traditionally published author -- all those premises were false, and the conclusions I drew from them were false as well. I spent four years earnestly bolstering my own hopes and the hopes of other SW fans, only to be proved wrong because my underlying assumptions were mistaken.
J.J. Abrams and the other major decision-makers on TROS were not the people of creative integrity and professional humility that I’d imagined. They cared far less about telling a great story, or developing the characters to their full potential, or respecting the actors who’d signed up to work with them, or even making kids and families happy, than they did about appeasing the worst parts of the SW fandom and trying to get their money. Even if that meant losing the support of fans like you and me. So I don’t want to waste another hour of my life grieving over Star Wars. I don’t want to feel sick every time I see a gifset or a meta post that reminds me that Ben Solo is dead, and Rey is alone in a desert pretending she has a family that cares about her. I’m tired of devoting my faith, my hope, my loyalty, my trust, my thoughts, and my creative energy to the worship of a false god and a broken story.
I have a God who has proven Himself faithful and true, a God who has already told humanity the best and most beautiful redemption story imaginable -- that His Son Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, even the very worst of them, and offer them eternal life and eternal fellowship with Him. That no matter how many mistakes we’ve made or selfish acts of cruelty we’ve committed, it’s never too late to recognize our wrongdoing, confess our unworthiness, and come home to His perfect Love. And that far from demanding our deaths as atonement for our sins, He was willing to suffer and die in our place so that we could live and know true fulfilment and purpose as part of His Body, His Bride, in this life and not just the next one.
He deserves all my faith, my hope, my loyalty, my trust, my thoughts, and my creative energy -- all those things I’ve squandered for the past four years and more. So that’s why I’m putting Star Wars away for as long as it takes to break its hold on my heart and mind. So I can get back to what I know -- have always known, deep down -- is the only worthy Object of my devotion, the only Truth that matters, the only Story that offers everyone, not just good people or talented people or people born into a powerful bloodline, a happy ending.
To all who’ve followed this blog over the past few years, thanks for your friendship and support. The people I’ve met in this fandom are by far the best thing about the whole experience, the one part of it that I don’t and never will regret. If you decide you’d like to stay in touch and keep up with my professional fantasy writing, my philosophical musings, my aesthetic delights and/or occasional silly cat videos, you’re very welcome to do so by following me at @rj-anderson .
Thanks.
so i went to try & figure out how to make a discord server and ended up just doing it? it turns out to be really easy. so uh, here’s the link:

i’ll moderate if necessary but i don’t intend to participate in the conversation, lest i accidentally spoil things. won’t be surprised if it doesn’t get used much, but this can be a place to talk strategy re: the current “game" if you guys are interested
no offence to miss gaga (full offense to mr. cooper) but why do they both look like cheetos
Hey luvs! Just checking in for the last time! I know u usually never like these “update” posts but anyways
So I’m probably not gonna blog anymore. I got bored of it. And I found something more important and interesting: *drumroll* God!
It’s not that he’s a new thing in my life. It’s just that I was finally able to give my life to him. With that being said, I don’t need to fill “the God shaped hole in my heart” with stuff like blogging or reading posts and things like that anymore. So that’s why im logging off officially.
Also, this place really needs Jesus, so if u, reading this right now, don’t know that yet, I just wanted to tell u that Jesus loves u and he died for u <33
Okay that’s all! Maybe see u later maybe not. God knows! Stay safe and God bless u! It was great to meet a lot of u wonderful ppl here! Gonna miss u <3
