The time that passed during the wait for Johnny to come home was quiet, not that there was much to talk about in the first place. You’d stopped trying to reason with Simon when he’d settled himself down at the kitchen table like he owned the place (which apparently he did).

Lacey had watched the man for the first 30 minutes, standing at the edge of the kitchen, peeing around the corner and and staring with wide eyes. It was fine at first, but after those 30 minutes you had shooed her off. No use getting her involved if you could help it. And the guy- Simon, he’d gruffly said at one point- had been getting antsy with her staring at him.

“You certain he was going to be back soon?” Simon’s voice filters through your thoughts as you wipe down the counter. You tense, shoulders tightening, to prevent yourself from huffing in frustration. 

“Yeah. He said so.” Blunt, to the point. Better than stuttering at least, you’d done enough of that when Simon first caught you off guard. “It’s just a supply run, should be back any minute now.” A bluff, but you weren’t about to tell the man with a gun that you weren’t sure. That’d be an idiotic move.

That seems to satisfy Simon, as he simply grunts and goes back to checking his gun. As if having it out wasn’t enough intimidation. You grit your teeth and turn back to cleaning. Keeping your hands busy was a better directive than sitting around waiting for Johnny anyways; Kept the fear at bay even if only slightly. 

"So you're-" The sound of the back door banging open saves you from yet another one of Simon’s questions. In comes Johnny, all smiles and laden with bags of supplies and groceries, already talking a mile a minute.

“I got the supplies Y/n, made sure ta get somethin’ for Lacey too since she’s been right helpful...” He stops himself as he walks into the kitchen and spots the scene played out there. Simon sitting at the table with his gun and you standing by the counter still holding a washcloth that's paused mid-scrub. 

“Mactavish.” Simon’s the first one to speak, eyes narrowed as he stands from the table. He leaves the gun- thank god- but that doesn’t stop you from keeping an eye on it just in case.

“I can explain?” Johnny’s smile turns sheepish, as if he knows he’s in trouble for whatever he did. Not that it’s your business to listen in, but it was hard not to considering the circumstances. And the fact that they're in the same room.

“I think I’m owed that, yes.” Simon crosses his arms, raising a brow beneath the mask. Either he’s pissed, or his annoyance is just as deadly. You’d happily guess the former. “Considering there’s a complete stranger in the house and I don’t believe I was given word of it.”

“My name’s-” You start.

“Quiet. Ain’t talking to you.” Simon cuts you off with a harsh wave of the hand. His focus is still on Johnny, who’s glancing between you both as if trying to determine the best way to explain his actions.

“Well- y’see Simon, he just showed up one day on th’ porch carrying his daughter and I couldn’t just- leave them there” He gestures to you and then over in the direction of the living room where Lacey was still occupying herself.

“You fucking should’ve.” Comes Simon’s unimpressed response. Johnny ignores it in favor of continuing.

“Look I just- made a deal. He cleans house, cooks meals, basically makes sure the upkeep is kept on top of in exchange for a roof over 'is head. Mutually beneficial.” He finishes with a gesture over at you, holding back a huff when Simon looks unimpressed. “C’mon Si, they aren’t doing any harm. B’sides, they’ll be off to the Erson camp once Lacey’s old enough to travel the whole distance. Wouldn’t hurt for them to stay, I figured.”

“You figured wrong. They’re a liability.” Simon mutters in return, stepping away from Johnny and back to the table to pick up his gun. “What if we’re ambushed? Last thing we need is dead weight costing us.”

That slightly annoyed you. Was he suggesting you were defenseless? You survived this long in this hellhole of a world; That had to count for something, right? “I’m perfectly capable of fighting for myself and Lacey, that shouldn’t be an issue.”

“Yet I easily got in here because you weren’t paying attention.” Simon snaps back, glaring at you now. 

“That’s not fair when Johnny’s the one who left the damn house open in the first place-“

“Don’t blame someone else for this. You should’ve swept the house as soon as he was gone to make sure everything was safe.”

You open your mouth again, ready to fire back with another comment, but Johnny’s already stepping in with his hands up to try and diffuse the growing argument.

“Okay, okay. I get where you’re coming from Si, but they’re still useful!” A glance from Simon clearly reads “Really?” And you have to stifle your growing irritation with the man as Johnny sighs. “Yes, really. If you’re so worried about liabilities, I’ll take full responsibility for ‘em. Anything happens, it’s on me.”

Simon grunts, looking unconvinced, but Johnny’s stubborn expression makes it clear he won’t budge on the decision. “Fine. Your responsibility. If anything- and I mean anything, Mactavish- happens because of them, it’s on your head.”

“Yessir.”

Simon glances at you and then turns away, stalking out of the kitchen. He takes the stiflingly cold atmosphere with him, thankfully, leaving you and Johnny standing awkwardly together in the space. 

Silence drifts between you two, then Johnny perks up again and starts setting the supply bags on the table. “Well then, guess we should get these put away! Gimme a hand, would you y/n? There’s more bags in the truck I gotta get.”

You nod jerkily, stifling the snarky question you wanted to make about Simon’s attitude. Now wasn’t the time to be irritated over some guy. Now was the time to unpack supplies and plan the rest of the week’s meals. Plus enforce any rationing that might be needed.

So you get to work, starting to unpack the bags on the table while Johnny heads back out to the truck to retrieve the rest. Lacey comes to help after a minute and her chatter helps ease the remaining tension, but nevertheless you get the nagging feeling that living here was about to get a lot more complicated.
