Alright, because I need her design For Reasons, here's my initial draft of Rose. Looking at the map Noonvale is like heckin' north (further than even Luke's caves!), so I went more viking with her clothing. I also wanted to have callbacks to the colors I use in Martin's design. I'm gonna sleep on it, and see how I feel about it in the morning!
So I'm a been thinking about Redwall again. Specifically the Redwall TV show. So I personally prefer the Redwall TV show over the original book because of the better characterization of cornflower. (The book is still amazing!) While I like the Martin the Warrior book over the TV show.
However thinking about the shows, I realized they had a parallel for the climax. Both Cornflower and Rose where captured and used against the heroes. With only Cornflower suriveing.
For Matthias and Cornflowers situation, part of me couldn't help but think. Was Martin looking out for them? They were in his Abbey, and he was faced with the same thing, could he have just been "I won't let it happen again...." He lost Rose he wasn't about to see another Warrior lose his love.
Also I realized why Rose death hit so much harder as a kid. I saw cornflower held at sword point and survive! So they would do the same thing for Rose, Martin would save her. They set up that expectation in the first Season only to stab you in the heart instead.
Digital illustration of Martin the Warrior from Brian Jacques’ Redwall series, brooding alone in the Abbey hall. Martin sits with a pint of October Ale in one paw and a late‑blooming rose in the other, reminding him of his lost love, Laterose of Noonvale. Suddenly, he’s struck by the sense that he’s not quite alone; he swears he feels the faint suggestion of a hand squeeze his shoulder.
Instagram just threw up a "you just never get over some character deaths" post, so I thought I'd reflect on a few character deaths that I'm still not over.
I'm focusing on deaths that "stuck," so no resurrections, no alternate universe versions of people, and no cloning shenanagins.
This post has spoilers, so if you're reading anything you don't want potentially spoiled, maybe finish that and then come read this post.
Ok, so in no particular order, here are the character deaths I am SUPER not over.
1. Commander Julius Root (The Artemis Fowl series)
This death was brutal and I literally cried my eyes out when I read the chapter. I wanted this to be reversed at the end of the book, and when it wasn't, I cried AGAIN. Holly's mentor and parental figure in the LEP did not deserve to get Opal Koboi-ed like that.
2. Detective Sergeant Karrin Murphy (The Dresden Files)
I will die mad about this one. Butcher fridged a badass disabled character for no goddamn reason. This death didn't cause tears, it caused fury hotter than the cores of 10,000 suns.
3. Mara Jade Skywalker (Legacy if the Force series)
I cried so hard at this one. Mara was the first family member to see what Jacen had become and he killed her for it. Poor Luke has had so much death and loss in his life, and this was just heartbreaking.
4. Chewbacca (The New Jedi Order series)
I mean, as far as deaths go, getting crushed by a falling moon while saving the life of the youngest son of the man you have a life debt to is pretty fitting. Didn't stop me crying for everyone's favorite walking carpet.
5. Laterose (Redwall series)
This one was heartbreaking because it goes by so fast, and on first read, I missed it until Martin found her in the aftermath of the battle. The Battle of Marshank had a heck of a body count, but that one was just such a tearjerker and a double-hitter on subsequent reads.
I’ve always wanted to workshop a human design for Martin, but it’s hard to top perfection... so I just ended up doodling the already existing design made by Lizzpere! Probably one of my biggest artistic inspirations tbh :P
I ended up making a human design for Rose too! The image is spoiler-heavy though, so that one’s available under the cut if you’re interested!
There’s honestly so many headcanons rattling around in my brain for how the dark forest works. I might make a more comprehensive post about it eventually because if I don’t ramble about it I’ll 100% combust 😭
