Somehow, despite never submitting any of the paperwork they sent me—not the background check or identification info, not the domestic violence affidavit, none of it—ICE had apparently offered me a job.
According to the application portal, my pre-employment activities remained pending. And yet, it also showed that I had accepted a final job offer and that my onboarding status was “EOD”—Entered On Duty, the start of an enlistment period. I moused over the exclamation mark next to “Onboarding” and a helpful pop-up appeared. “Your EOD has occurred. Welcome to ICE!”
I clicked through to my application tracking page. They’d sent my final offer on Sept. 30, it said, and I had allegedly accepted. “Welcome to Ice. … Your duty location is New York, New York. Your EOD was on Tuesday, September 30th, 2025.”
Perhaps, if I’d accepted, they would have demanded my pre-employment paperwork, done a basic screening, realized their mistake, and fired me immediately. And yet, the pending and upcoming tasks list suggested a very different outcome. My physical fitness test had been initiated on Oct. 6, it said: three days in the future. My medical check had apparently been completed on Oct. 6.
The portal also listed my background check as completed on Oct. 6. Had I preemptively passed? Was ICE seriously going to let me start training without finding out the first thing about me? I reached out to ICE for an explanation, but never heard back.
The only thing left for me to do was press the green “Accept” button on the home page. And maybe I should have. Maybe no one would have ever checked my name and I could have written the story of a lifetime. Or maybe the agency infamous for brutalizing and disappearing people with no regard for the law or basic human rights would have figured out exactly who I am while I was in one of their facilities with no way to escape. I’m not actually a domestic terrorist sent straight from Antifa headquarters, but to a paranoid fascist regime increasingly high on their own supply, I sure look like one on paper. Self-preservation won out.
I hit “Decline,” closed my browser, and took a long, deep breath.

Slate's reporter Laura Jedeed tells of her experience with the hiring practice at ICE.
She didn't tell them that she was a journalost or that she had made pro-Palestine posts in the past. But even a simple search could have revealed these things.
In the end she stopped short of actually taking the job.
It's probably easier to get hired by ICE than it was for a 17-year-old girl to get "hired" by Jeffrey Epstein.
I'd bet that some investigative journalists have already joined ICE and we'll be hearing revelations from them later this year.

An administration that executes Air Assault operations in downtown Chicago and officially declares that progressive views on immigration, race, gender, and sexuality “foment political violence” is not going to respect the midterm results. I have tried to be gentle these last few months but at this point I’m going to need you to open your fucking eyes and see the world around you. Nine months is too long to be stuck in the denial stage. Our only three options are violence, acquiescence, or economic sanctions. I don’t want violence, and acquiescence is out of the question. So let’s kick them where it hurts: right in the economy.

I am worried that the Democratic party is going to decide to take sides on this, go for some kind of unholy alliance with the tech bros in the name of defeating Cheeto Jesus. Pundits also have an extremely unfortunate history of throwing their lot in with national socialists — if they like Medicaid, how bad could they be? Bad! Both sides are very bad! Any Democratic strategist or beltway pundit that makes noises about how maybe [bastard] has a point or how [asshole] could help us win in 2026 needs to be immediately dispatched to a farm upstate where they can run and play. No quarter, no compromise: let them fight.

And then, of course, there is Minnesota, where a gunman dressed as a police officer wounded state Senator John Hoffman and his wife, and killed state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband. The killer was a Trump-supporting evangelical who had a hit list of 45 other elected officials including Tim Walz and Ilhan Omar. Vance Boelter doesn’t work for the government and these assassinations weren’t ordered by the administration. Here’s the thing, though: ten years ago, when “lock her up” remained a scandal for months, these killings would have shocked the country. Here and now, it shocked no one. After all, conservative news spends all day every day calling Democrats criminals who are actively attempting to destroy America by facilitating an invasion of foreign hordes and transing all our children. Boelter simply took that argument to its logical conclusion.
