I'm coming back to my natural habitat (2021 jayvik ATLA AU)
What if Tenzin and Lin Beifong were together instead of Pema?
Personally, I love imagining them together because Lin would (in my eyes) balance out Tenzin’s typically peaceful nature with her more brazen personality. I don’t doubt whatsoever that underneath Lin’s reinforced exterior, she is full of compassion and love without conditions.
When pregnant with Tenzin’s children, Lin’s fierceness would remain unwavering with quick-tempered statements such as “What, you think just because I’m pregnant I want to be treated like a piece of glass?” She would go out of her way to try and prove that she is far from being a delicate flower others may attempt to make her out to be. However, once in a while, she will relent and allow herself to be vulnerable and taken care of by Tenzin. Because of the intimate nature of those moments, she refuses to allow anyone else to witness her in that state. But, because she is carrying the next generation of air benders (and possibly different variations of other benders such as earth benders that can lava bend), she has someone that she places her utmost trust in to watch over her and Tenzin.
Lin would be everything that her mother wasn’t, involved. Through her journey with motherhood and relationship with Tenzin, she learns to make peace with her upbringing and simmers some of her bitterness towards the past.
You know what would have been really cool about cross-element bending? Like lava-bending or mud-bending? Having to use the opposite bending style.
Like, if you're a fire bender who can sense lava, you have to use earth bending style. You can naturally connect with the fire half, but have to use earth style bending to connect with the earth half and direct the whole.
Fire bender + earth bending style = lava
Earth bender + fire bending style = lava
Earth bender + water bending style = mud
ETC.
Like, it would fit so well with Iroh's whole learning from all sources of wisdom/all bending techniques lesson.
Lava bending Lin is so OP! But why would she train for years just to stick to farming? She’d make an awesome chief with bending skills like that.
Hi, anon~
Thanks for the ask! Lin is absolutely OP! I’m loving that she learned lava bending. Lin trained hard to make her parents proud, and it really paid off. Toph always wanted Lin to reach her full potential, and seeing Lin’s lava bending makes Kanto even prouder because it reminds him of a part of himself in her.
Lin’s been a huge asset to the community, taking down bandits and criminals (totally giving off Stardew Valley vibes) and even using her bending skills for farming.
And if the city’s ever in trouble, Lin’s the first to step up. Even though she chose not to join the force, she’s always ready to defend her home and the people she loves.
Ghazan, a character I'd love to have a bit longer in the show. Why laughing to tears? I'd say Bolin jokes, these two could definitely be friends in a more mentor way in other circumstances.
Rewatching atla and I'm just thinking about how Lava bending developed so much over the course of the two series (+comics).
In atla we only ever see avatars do lava bending (eg. Roku destroying the temple w/ lava, Kyoshi using lava to help make Kyoshi Island, that one past avatar from "The Avatar State" episode who we see erupting volcanos, ect). So the natural assumption is that it's a technique exclusive to someone who can bend both fire and earth.
This assumption wasn't exactly wrong but not completely right. The evidence we have from non avatar lava benders points to the only requirement of lava bending being that the bender has to have both an earthbender and firebender somewhere in their lineage.
We see this with Bolin, whose mother was from the fire nation and father was from the earth kingdom, and since both Bolin and Mako can bend, we can assume that their parents could as well. It's also implied in the comics with the lavabender Sun. While we don't know anything about his lineage, he has amber eyes (a fire nation trait, while most earth kingdom citizens have green eyes) and is from an area that was a fire nation colony, which strongly implies there was a firebender somewhere in his ancestry.
