Surprise Victory

8/Rose Doctor Who/Harry Potter/Greek Mythology crossover AU

She heard the noise again, and couldn’t resist investigating. It had been millennia since anyone had prayed to her let alone petitioned her for her personal aid. But Nike, Greek goddess of victory, was curious as to what type of mortal had summoned her, and why, so she appeared before her would-be worshiper.

She was breath-taking. Theta had never expected an actual goddess to show up, let alone, one as lovely as her. Yet there she was. Nike, the winged goddess of victory-hold on-“Where are your wings?!” He stupidly spluttered.

Resisting the urge to face-palm(but not succeeding in suppressing a smirk), she replied(in her dual layered voice),“Is that the best you can come up with? Honestly?! ‘Where are your wings?’’ A sheepish grin spread over his face as Theta continued to babble on regardless,“If you’re a goddess, why do you sound like you’re from a south-London council estate? Why-”. “Do you honestly want me to smite you?! ‘Cause I could! Now enough questions! What do you want?!” she cut him off mid-ramble. “To pass my NEWT’s with all O’s…” he muttered. “Fine, fine, give me a mo’!” she thundered back at him. “Wait a minute, is that, is that a diary? Do you honestly keep a diary?! Seriously?! What sort of self-respecting teenage boy keeps a diary? Give me that!” she laughingly demanded, making a grab for said diary(and succeeding!) as Theta’s face turned beet-red. “It’s not a diary- it’s a dream-journal; now give it here!” he shouted while attempting to retrieve his “journal”(and failing spectacularly!) before she read it and discovered all the mad dreams he’d been having ever since he could remember. “Too late!” she sing-songed. “Now let’s see who you are, 'Theta Sigma’.” Her face fell. “Theta Sigma,” she repeated dully. “My lost love…” she trailed off. “Nike, my Nike,” he whispered, as if in a trance, unknowingly drawing a small golden hourglass pendant  stamped with a silver sickle from beneath his jumper.

Glancing up, her eyes widened as they fell on the pendant. She let out a gasp as she took in the small silver sickle embossed on the side of the sand-glass. “Flip it over and open the top!” she pleaded. “But all the sand will fall out,” he confusedly stated. “Yes and no, just flip it over and open it!” she begged. “But I don’t understand-” he began. Steeling herself, she rushed over to him, held the pendant with him and spoke in a firm, clear, voice that brooked no room for arguments. “Flip it over and open it. Trust me.” As she released him, she took three steps back, making sure to give him a reassuring glance as he nodded once and flipped and opened the hourglass.

As the sand poured out it instantly soured upward before turning black and beginning to envelope Theta in black and golden flames. A moment later they disappeared, leaving no trace of Theta Sigma, the wizard. Instead, standing in his place, was a tall, broad-shouldered man with ears that stuck out a bit, a roman nose, close-shorn hair so dark, it could be mistaken for black, clad in a black leather jacket, a deep aubergine jumper, black jeans, and black military boots. His eyelids snapped open to reveal solid black eyes as deep, dark and fathomless as two black holes, or two one-way entrances to death and destruction. In one out-stretched hand he held a silver scythe with an ebony handle and a single giant glowing blue sapphire at the top, which emitted whirring, buzzing sound. In short, this was Theta Sigma, or Thanatos, Greek god of death and destruction, and husband to Nike. “I remember now! The Olympians were going to sentence you to life as a mortal, but I volunteered to take your place! I’ve finally found you! Nike, can you ever forgive me?” Thanatos boomed as he dropped his symbol of power to whirl his beautiful(and newly found) wife around the room. “Of course my love! Promise me something though,” she sighed. “Anything!” he beamed, or at least he was until her hand collided with a crack against his cheek. “Ow! What was that for?” he moaned, turning to pout like a mortal toddler who’s favorite toy had been taken away. Nike took his face in her hands, turned him back around, and snogged him within an inch of his immortal life. “Don’t ever leave me again!" she wailed. ”Now, let’s go home.“ bemusedly grinning at her, he took her hand as they stepped through a portal into eternity.

Sorry if you've been asked this before, but has any technologically-savvy person tried to trace her webcam, contact the proper authorities (who that'd be, I don't know), and get Chip-chan help? (Also, which Korea is Seoul in? Because I know North Korea isn't a big fan of the rest of the world.)

Seoul is in South Korea. I believe some people have tried to dox her via her IP but I have no idea how far along they got with that.

Hi, could you recommend an English translation of Les Mis? (Unabridged, if at all possible.) Thanks!

Hoo boy, are there ever strong opinions on this one! Fahnestock/MacAfee and Donougher would be your best bet, IMHO. FMA reads better, but Donougher has a lot of footnotes, which are REALLY HELPFUL when it comes to all of Hugo’s puns. (Hint: everything that can be a pun, is a pun.)  

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Wilbour is the original translation-- the one found on Project Gutenberg and the like... it’s quite good from the glances I’ve had at it when I don’t have a paper copy of Les Mis nearby. 

I’m torn on Julie Rose, because it is the most recent translation, but it’s also the most colloquial, and she picks some really odd turns of phrase at times. 

I’m not fond of Hapgood, because some of the translation choices seem a little off to me. Like... idk, like the translator went through the text with a French-to-English dictionary and picked the first word for each entry. I think she does odd things with the French ‘vous.’ 

DO NOT READ DENNY. Return Denny’s translation to the bookstore if you get it. Denny condescended to translate Les Mis and just like... threw out whole sections because he felt like it. An entire digression got moved from its symbolically important place in the novel to an appendix in the back. I really dislike translation projects begun on the understanding that the translator knows so much better than the original author. :/ 

Hope you don’t mind I’ve made this public, so other people on my dash can weigh in on it! I know there was at least one member of brick!club who compared translations, and might have a more informed opinion on this!
