Overthinking Original Characters Time!
If my characters had daemons they would have:
Tim Richards - a coyote named Mekala (a goddess of destruction from the Aymara Indians of the Andes)
Rachel Hunt - an American bittern named Hothur (a Norse mythological warrior who slayed his brother)
Sangeeta Verma - an Indian palm squirrel named Madinat (an Arabic word meaning "city")
Lawrence Johnson - a Black-capped Chickadee named Ayizan (the loa of the marketplace and commerce)
Adam Weinberg - an Egyptian weasel named Pasargadae (the capital of Cyrus the Great)
The Girl - a blue Morpho butterfly (unnamed)
Coyotes hunt in small packs or pairs. They are adaptable, opportunistic, versatile carnivores. In mythology they are tricksters and transformers, as well as a sign of beginning and ending, life and death. As a spirit animal they symbolize skill, instinct, resourcefulness, and flexibility and are a reminder of consequences and learning from mistakes.
American Bitterns are secretive, cryptically colored birds. They are a generalist carnivore and a solitary hunter. They are migratory and males guard the nests. They are an old symbol of bad luck and a symbol of stratagem.
Indian Palm Squirrels are opportunists. They are easily domesticated and naturally active. They are protective of their food sources and have good vision and sense of touch. As a spirit animal they symbolize joy in work, cleverness, resourcefulness, providence toward the future, trustworthiness, a strong sense of duty, a sociable nature, and effective communication.
Black-capped Chickadees are bold birds, especially around humans. They have good spatial memory and are very sociable, often forming flocks with multiple species. They have complex vocalizations and the nest is built by the female only. They are inquisitive and curious. As a spirit animal they symbolize speaking the truth, trusting one’s self, and inner strength.
Egyptian weasels are active predators with a reputation for cleverness and guile. They are fierce hunters and capable killers which move by jumping. They have an unstable and flexible social structure and are territorial. In mythology they are credited with great wisdom and courage, but are also poisonous and unlucky. They are resolute and will battle much larger enemies.
I didn't do any research on the Morpho Butterfly at the time when I did the other research, so I don't have a fancy summary, but basically I chose it because butterflies symbolize change and transformation and also the soul (see Psyche of "Cupid and Psyche" who is one of my mythological influences on the girl).
