Why Marc Spector's Hellfire Outfit Doesn't Work

The problem is the exact thing that's got all the girls sans myself twitterpated:

It's showing off his skin.

This isn't about y'all finding him hot and attractive. I'm not even saying you can't view it as such, but this flies DIRECTLY against Marc's core character. He hides himself under layers of blunt force, of resigned snark to hide his self-loathing and self-deprecation, so that no one will see the brokenness inside of him. So no one will get close to him and be hurt because of him, so that he won't have an(other) innocent life on his conscience, so that Marc won't have a chance to unknowingly hurt someone else, so that he won't drag them down into his messy personal life, and so that they don't have to suffer as a result of contact with him.

And that translates directly to his dress code.

In the show, Marc is only ever seen in nothing but his boxers ONCE, and that is because he's alone and SERIOUSLY depressed. No one is there to see the vulnerability, no one is there to see the scars, to see the hurt, except Steven, who he trusts. He trusts Layla, obviously, but there's an equally obvious reason why the clothes stayed on while they were together (read: incoming apocalyptic fiasco, plus a strained relationship.)

Even the new comics stay true to this because the only one he is COMPLETELY at ease with is Tigra. Tigra, his old flame and rekindled lover, who can pull the mask off his face gently or a little roughly, and Marc won't even twitch at the action, whereas his own ex-wife's mere presence disturbs him enough that Marc has to retreat and let one of the alters front while pulling down the mask to hide from her.

And while I'm a little iffy on the panel, the more recent-ish comic where Marc is fronting and has had his clothes from the waist up stripped from him is also true to form. Not only did it happen while he was passed out and Khonshu felt impish, Marc did not care about it because Tigra was the only one coming and the only one who saw him like that (WHICH KHONSHU KNEW, UNDERSTOOD, AND RESPECTED.) Tigra, the one he trusts with seeing him, broken and bruised and vulnerable and at his lowest, is the ONLY one to see him in that state, and is the REASON he was so relaxed when they spoke there before reconciling from a previous spat.

He TRUSTS her enough to let her see all of his faults, he TRUSTS her to not abuse that privilege, he TRUSTS Tigra to see him when the walls are down, Marc TRUSTS Tigra so much that he will allow the physical representation of his walls to be lowered BECAUSE HE TRUSTS HER.

The Hellfire Gala suit contradicts and BREAKS this core character trait of Marc's because the world has hurt, burned, and broken him every chance it got. He has NO REASON to show himself off to the world, and even if you go the manipulative route with Khonshu's character, Khonshu simply wouldn't do that because Marc will tear into him and refuse to follow his orders until Khonshu backtracked it.

Keep your sex appeal crap away from Marc Spector (AND from Jean Grey), Marvel Rivals. You've got plenty of characters who are loud and proud about their preference for skimpy outfits. USE YOUR TALENTS ON SHOWING THEM OFF, NOT MY MODEST, CHASTE, AND EMOTIONALLY RESERVED FAVORITE(S).
