WONDERMAN

Short thoughts on the 8-episode Spotlight

1 — MATINEE

- Rogers the Musical, AND the TCL theatre mention!

- Actor in a movie playing an actor auditioning for a part in a movie with the title of this show. WILD.

- Simon has an interesting way of thinking; Trevor waxes philosophical.

2 — SELF-TAPE

- Simon has emotional regulatory issues…?

- Maybe linked to his powers…?

- Trevor is a DODC plant; obviously.

3 — PACOIMA

- For-profit prisons in the USA isn’t even a fictional thing, but okay.

- Haitian-style birthday party? Seems a good gathering of family.

- Simon feels out of sorts at his mom’s birthday party. Seems his emotions are the source of his powers?

4 — DOORMAN

- Black and white filter. But why? Backstory?

- Josh Gad cameo! When even Frozen is MCU canon.

- Also why is that portal noise the same bioacoustics sound effect from the Godzilla KOTM movie?

5 — FOUND FOOTAGE

- The trope of needing to go somewhere quick but not being able to due to unforeseen circumstances

- Fascinating, getting side quested by a teenager.

- House party turns bust. Did not see that coming.

6 — CALLBACK

- Simon overthinks a lot; he’s possibly neurodivergent, maybe.

- VK’s board looks to be full of Easter eggs…?

- “You’re not your condition”, but when what you have is an intrinsic part of you, what then?

7 — KATHY FRIEDMAN

- “Kids are cruel, they sniff out anyone who’s different.”

- “Nothing can possibly go wrong” is a jinx for everything.

- When Simon’s greatest weakness is also ironically his greatest strength.

8 — YUCCA VALLEY

- Trevor tries to set things right, by shifting the blame away from Simon to himself, by utilizing his past as “The Mandarin”. True friend takes the fall.

- Simon’s suit for the WonderMan character looks good!

- Trevor is maybe at the Raft? Something more…

EYES OF WAKANDA

Spoilers in my thoughts below.

EP 1 — INTO THE LION’S DEN

1. Starting with opening credits; interesting

2. Great animations. Exciting action scenes!

3. Noni showcasing her exceptional skills as a warrior.

4. Fascinating conversation between The Lion and Noni that tells of Wakanda’s secrecy, and sending agents out of missions, sometimes against each other. Fascinating!

5. Framing Wakanda as a nation that suppresses freedoms is an interesting choice…

EP 2 — LEGENDS AND LIES

1. The story takes us to Ancient Greece!

2. Achilles of Troy; presenting an old tale as a mission. Trojan Horse, their Achilles heel.

3. Also, beautiful pastel colors!

4. Also, a story about painful betrayal, service, and loyalty, of friendship and brotherhood.

5. Fascinating that it is also about self-realization.

EP 3 — LOST AND FOUND

1. Ancient China! (1400 AD, during the Ming Dynasty!) Also, dragons are an important figure in Chinese culture; even the dragon symbolizes the emperor.

2. Agent Basha is overconfident.

3. Fascinating that Jorani (the spy) would ask for the return of the dragon artifact, inside which was a Wakandan artifact.

4. Fascinating intersecting of two cultures, over an artifact that has importance to both.

5. Great story. Great visuals too!

EP 4 — THE LAST PANTHER

1. Interesting settings against the Battle of Ada in 1896, it seems; when the Ethiopians first went up against the Kingdom of Italy.

2. Prince Tafari and Kuda return from a mission.

3. The episodes line up to tell a story in Ep4, as well as connects directly to the first Black Panther (2018) film.

4. Interesting storyline about timelines and futures

5. Overall, great season.

THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS

Slight spoilers for my brief thoughts:

8-9/10, or 4.5/5, if you catch my drift 😏

Incredible visuals, I’d say. Amazing sound effects too!

The protagonists live! (Because of course they do; what’s a superhero movie if they don’t?)

Pleasant surprise to know hyperspace travel and lightspeed (well, a version of it) exists in the MCU

One mid-credits scene (ooh!), connects directly to Avengers: Doomsday (I thought it was gonna connect to Thunderbolts, but it doesn’t. (It might, off-screen, if you squint…?)).

Also one post-credits scene, fun little F4 in-universe cartoon

I thought it was gonna be longer, but it’s a good 2 hours of movie.

S1E1 — Take Me Home

1. Cool title card, liked it.

2. Fascinating that as smart as she is, her track record was what got her kicked out of MIT.

3. Parker is shady, but that’s expected from a guy with a lair and all that.

4. Inadvertently creating Natalie from her subconscious is interesting.

S1E2 — Will The Real Natalie Please Stand Up?

1. More somewhat-shenanigans with NATALIE; fascinating.

2. Joe seems like a cool person, is he hiding something we as the audience don’t know yet?

3. Parker mentions a deal gone wrong with an entity; who is this? Also, what’s with Parker’s powers?

S1E3 — We In Danger, Girl

1. Interesting reveal that “Joe” is Obadiah Stane’s son Ezekiel. Maybe he’s being overly-nice is that because he wants to not be like his dad.

2. Riri getting PTSD flashbacks, and still not telling NATALIE what’s going on?

3. Riri also getting in trouble, and inadvertently accidentally betraying her new friend.

1. A bit of a complex episode, with big feelings.

2. Interesting to know that Zelma and her mom know magic

3. I wonder what Parker’s team is doing to Zeke.

S1E5 — Karma’s A Glitch

1. Parker turning Zeke into a human puppet machine is really mean.

2. Riri’s new suit looks amazing; also I like how the magic makes its way into the suit.

3. Parker’s team is disposable; I think they knew that anyway.

S1E6 — The Past is the Past

1. It’s kind of nice that Riri gets her best friend back.

2. Interesting metaphor of the hood being like a drug to Parker in that he says he can’t live without it.

3. Mephisto. Really?

amazing showstopping incredible. went in with high expectations and came out with them exceeded.

YELENA my beloved. oh strong woman broken girl the light that refused to be put out. ALEXEI FATHERING 😭😭 he is the gift that keeps giving. BUCKY THE CONGRESSMAN i loved his politicianspeak ugh so realistic and hilarious. i was so happy to see him again being badass and fighting evil <3 and i loved the hating on john walker. military asshole get outta here! if we’re doing comparisons (which as i say below is kinda pointless) he’s more Tony than he is Steve, which is interesting. i have no opinions about Ava other than that i am very entertained by how British she is 🫶🏼

THE BOOST ALEXEI GAVE YELENA JUST LIKE THE BOOST STEVE GAVE NATASHA!! i love how the new avengers aren’t copypasted versions of the old avengers but this callback and nod to the other super soldier and ex red room assassin duo was marvellous

the reminder (intentional or not) of the Sokovia Accords argument. i caught on when valentina started going all ‘i control the greatest superhero’ and i was cackling with glee when he started rebelling against her like AHA. THERE. controlling superheroes? they tried it before and failed, valentina… and for good reason too. it’s hilarious that she thought she could do it better

yelena and bob bob and yelena ohhhh my heart. i knew there was gonna be some connection when they jump cut to yelena being like 🤨 when bob said he couldnt remember anything like oh dear this girl with such a big heart and such a shit past 😭😥😥 i think it was cool of the writers to be respectful of yelena fans who believe she is aroace, and make their relationship so refreshingly innocent and genuine. there were zero jokes from the others about their closeness which i also SO appreciate. let the girl pay it forward in peace! i loved that what alexei and natasha did for her she did the same for bob. that’s exactly what love and compassion is like: it’s contagious!!

call it corny but i loved the theme of redemption and forgiving yourself and trying again. i saw someone say that it was kinda lame bc it was like ‘saved the day with the magic of friendship’ and like nOoOoo it wasn’t so simplistic at all!! guys!! they won by piling on him to stop him beating himself up (literally)!! i was fiercely whispering ‘ohhh yess get loved idiot’ during that scene. guys it’s not just about friendship it’s about love conquering apathy light conquering darkness compassion conquering hatred y’all!! they did not shy away from talking about suicide ideation and i can tell you that shit HITS if you can understand what it feels like. it’s about healing together! loving each other (as best as we can) through the darkness! i literally want to hug the writers this was such a good show.
