My Best of 2021: Lead Actress

My Best of 2021 is a series of annual lists in which I pick the best of the best from 2021, all leading up to my official picks for My Top 10 Films of 2021.

This category ended up probably being my favorite this year. That distinction generally goes to Supporting Actor, but several of my very favorite performances of 2021 were from leading ladies (see pretty much the whole Top 5, here). I especially loved Alana Haim’s breakthrough performance in Licorice Pizza. She explodes onto the screen with a performance so entirely sure about its doubt, so stubbornly steadfast about its wanderlust. Kristen Stewart actually made me care about Princess Diana, something I thought was impossible. Jessica Chastain and Nicole Kidman brought out the desperation within their real-life subjects in unique ways, the former attacking her genuine spirit to perfection and the latter tackling her iron will and brilliant tact with a vulnerable ferocity. Rounding out that Top 5 is Lady Gaga, who embraces House of Gucci’s camp completely and delivers a hammy performance that carefully explores her calculated character.
