Here is my run for today. It was very slow! I'm very soar! I dunno why, yesterday I had the day off and I decided not to run because I wanted to recover a bit more.

I haven’t officially blogged about this. My wife Alison and I are moving to Europe in mid-January.

It’s partly why I signed up to run Rotterdam as my first marathon :)

Alison words things better than I do, here’s her blog post on it:

In two and a half weeks, Mike and I are leaving Toronto and moving to Europe. Moving to a different country and staying there long enough to soak up the culture there has been one of my life’s greatest dreams for as long as I can remember.

I’ve been in Canada for 4.5 years now. While we don’t plan on being in Europe for anywhere near as long (at this stage we’ll be back in May), it’s going to be a challenge living out of suitcases and sleeping in a different bed every few nights. 

Luckily I like challenges. There are breaking points with having too many challenges all at once though, and that could be my unravelling for this marathon in April. That’s my only concern.

Apart from that, the rest are positives.

It’ll teach us how to downsize more

It’ll teach us how to adapt more 

It’ll open our eyes up to new cultures and new ways of living, even if they’re just subtle 

We fly into Sweden as our first stop.

Leaving Canada.

For now I'll only do a shirt post. I'm hoarding my David's tea and going to sleep looking at my Canada flag thats plastered on my wall. I keep talking to all my friends about Canada and I'm seriously looking into how to get back over there for a Masters.

When I was leaving I went the long way across. I started off in Halifax with everyone from England who went to Dal and then we traveled across to Quebec and Montreal. We split up and I rushed across to Toronto, where after visiting Ottawa (which i'd already seen) they rejoined me for a few days before I zipped off to Edmonton skipping the Prairies.

There were a few reasons why I skipped ahead and missed out the prairies. Mostly all Canadians i'd talked to told me to miss it out but also I needed to get home for mid june to start a job (which in the end fell through so that sucked!). Also I was heading to Indonesia after Canada and had all my flights booked and everything. Time meant I had to be picky with where I went and what I missed out.

I think WHEN I move back (there is no if!) that I'll do it again more thoroughly! Another thing I regret about skipping ahead is definitely FOMO (fear of missing out) … The guys I left behind brought this up and I definitely felt it skipping ahead. At the same time I quite liked being able to wander off and see stuff by myself, i'm very used to this from my trips around Europe. I've now been traveling by myself, with a friend, and in a group and each have good and bad points to them! I'm glad I spent the time I did with my friends but I also regret missing out some activities, I know they went horse riding and kayaking and I wish I had the chance to do that. One of the things being a solo traveler i've found is that sometimes you cant go on certain tours or activity because theres only one of you (a real problem in Indo!).

My absolute favourite part was the rockies, unbelievable. Completely blew me away. I loved them so much. I am going back there even if its just my ashes to be scattered! I shall spam you later with pictures I think. Also a terrible thing is that I cant pick one city I loved most! Everywhere I went had its own appeal and I have my own reasons for why I would go back to each one!

The two times I felt really sad about leaving Canada was when I was touching down in Newcastle because (apart from a 24 hour delay) I was happy to be home but also it meant the real end to my year abroad! I was no longer in Canada and despite being in Indonesia for a month it really hit me then! The other time was as I was leaving the rockies I felt really sad that I wouldn’t get t see them again for some time!
