Guess what happened to me yesterday (::::
I was reading a 17 chapter fic (incomplete) that had not been updated in a full year. So I was leaving my little comments, moving through the fic, and then I woke up yesterday morning and saw
18 CHAPTERS???
So I went to the last chapter to see the authors note bc if this was real I was OVER THE MOON
You mean to tELL ME. that an author I DONT KNOW. saw my ass GIGGLING over fluff and CRYING over angst. And decided to KEEP WRITING. just because I was reading??
Fellas when I tell you this made my entire YEAR.
Anyways here’s my ideal commenting tutorial:

Repeat for the whole chapter
And I usually write it in my notes app so if I accidentally refresh, it doesn’t delete everything,
then I paste it into the comment box
I can’t say it enough, please please please leave comments. ANY author with appreciate it, other readers might as well (and you just might get an update if the author gains interest again)
That one precious reader who always makes sure to leave a comment at every chapter you post, and not just any comment, a long detailed comment mentioning things they liked and things they wish will happen, THANK YOU. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

commenting can make a creative's day they will light up and smile so widely but for god's sake follow the following simple 3 steps: step 1 if you don't have anything nice to say if you hated this thing you didn't pay for this story, this art, this audio, this video PRESS THE BACK BUTTON AND GO ON WITH YOUR LIFE step 2 if all you can think of is to demand "update" or "is this story abandoned?" then take a deep breath, erase your words PRESS THE BACK BUTTON AND GO ON WITH YOUR LIFE step 3 it doesn't have to be long it can be 'extra kudos' or "thanks for sharing" you can keep it straightforward and simple please, leave a comment!
I know Real Life™ is hard right now and we're busy and tired, but I think, especially during events where people engage together and put out fics to a certain theme and enrich the fandom it would be nice with participants would give their other participants a bit of love.
It's a downward spiral - less engagement means less motivation to participate a second time and thus less stories.
Even if the story/series/pairing is not your teacup it's polite to at least leave a little heart or "Thanks for participating" or one of those nice little "double kudos" templates.
Or you can leave some love on another fic by that author that is more to your liking.

You're an absolute powerhouse leaving comments on so many exchange fics so fast! It's so joyful to me to get to see your smart takes on the work people put in 🥹. Your comments help me notice things in the fics I didn't.
This is true of so many people who leave comments, but I was so impressed by how many I saw from you specifically today. An inspiration. 💪🏻
Omg, Anon thank you! Here’s the thing. We all busted our asses and poured our hearts and souls into these stories. The least I do is read and comment on as many of them as possible. I just want to be a supportive member of this fantastic community.
If anyone is having a hard time with what to write in comments, here is my general template:
Compliment. I really liked (name one or two aspects that stuck out). If there’s a quote as you’re reading that speaks to you, copy and paste it. End with another compliment.
For example: Just wow! I loved the dialogue - the banter was so perfect I could hear their voices as I read it! The romantic tension was masterful. Amazing job! 👏
Also, it is infinitely better to kudos a fic and leave an emoji in the comments than do nothing!
i wont let myself log into ao3 on my phone, because i'm obsessive.
but i end up reading in the middle of the night anyways.
and then i have to come back the next day and spend forever leaving comments on all the amazing writing I've chewn threw.
