when it comes to shadows and darkness, there’s not a lot otto cannot do with them. as mentioned here, otto possesses the ability to marionette others through control of their shadows. this particular usage of his power is something he has not been able to tap into since his release from prison due to being almost completely disconnected from his powers over the last six years. it took him several years to learn how to do that and while he remembers how, he has to build his strength back up to do that.

easier for otto to do is the ability to have shadows attack someone for him. one of the most common examples of this is creating tangible creatures from shadows like in the above image. these creatures cannot think for themselves but do have independence of movement. they’re connected to otto through a hivemind of sorts allowing them to operate and attack without needing all of his focus. the more of these creatures otto creates at once, the less powerful each is. in the past, otto tended to only use two (and occasionally but rarely three) at a time. destroying the shadow creatures won’t hurt otto; harming otto will cause the creatures to return to protect him. if he sustains enough injury or is knocked unconscious, the creatures will disappear.

because the creatures are tangible, they can inflict damage and can kill. people who are wounded by otto’s shadow creatures will notice their skin turning black and necrotizing. if light and fire burn, then darkness and shadow rot. at the moment, otto can summon one creature though it isn’t as strong as he’d like it to be for full effectiveness. the shadow creatures are only produced at night when there is an abundance of darkness and shadow for him to use. light-based attacks can temporarily destroy them but they will regenerate soon after.

he can, and will, use shadows to make melee weapons and fight with them. this is not something he currently struggles with. being wounded (such as a cut) from these weapons will also cause some necrotizing though not to the severity of creatures. kicks and punches do not cause that level of damage to the body tissues, but there will be notable black stains lasting for varying periods of time depending on how severe the injury.

another form of shadow attack that otto uses is just the shadows themselves. he doesn’t have to create something to use shadows to attack; he simply bends them to his will to grab or throw people and objects. he can crush objects with shadows, open and close doors, etc. whatever he could do with his hands, he can do with the shadows through his mind. the more complicated the act, the more focus it takes - hence why he learned how to use his shadow creatures to clear the way for him. these attacks, depending on the severity and the strength of the shadow, will stain the skin. sometimes, the stains are as simple as smudges of eye shadow on the skin (ie otto using a light and brief touch rather than something heavier and/or more prolonged).

one of the reason otto got as powerful as he did so quickly was through his fear empowerment power. the more scared people are, the stronger he becomes in that moment. this is why he preferred, as a villain, to launch attacks where civilians were around. the terror created made him difficult to take down and is why he avoided capture for so long. with enough fear (such as during halloween, the twins’ rampage at the gala, or other sufficiently scary things), otto can ride that for extended periods of time but it will fade. enough of a fear dose will give him a sense of being high so sometimes he goes to horror movies for fun.
