Starting my 2021 Running Challenge
“The journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step.” - Chinese proverb.
As I’ve posted before, my 2021 running goal is to virtually run the length of the UK. The traditional starting and end points of this trek are Lands End on the southwest coast of England and John o’Groats on the northeast coast of Scotland.
There is no official long distance trail that covers the whole journey (unlike the USA’s Continental Divide Trail or the Pacific Crest Trail) from top to bottom of the UK. So there’s no official distance either.
Google Maps says driving the distance is 838 miles and the walking distance (largely using roads) is 813 miles.
People that walk the distance usually use a combination of roads, trails, and cross country walks. Distances can be 1,110 to 1,200 miles. If you sign up with those virtual race folks their distance is 1,083 miles.
I chose 1,200 miles for my challenge because it’s a real distance goal for running the full distance that equates nicely to 100 miles a month for 12 months. And it also makes the math as to whether I’m ahead or behind pace sooo much easier!
That said, I do plan on January being a lower mileage month. I took time off in December to rest an injured ankle, so I’ll take a bit of time getting up to the necessary daily distances required.
