I want you to know one thing.
You know how this is: if I look at the crystal moon, at the red branch of the slow autumn at my window, if I touch near the fire the impalpable ash or the wrinkled body of the log, everything carries me to you, as if everything that exists, aromas, light, metals, were little boats that sail toward those isles of yours that wait for me.
Well, now, if little by little you stop loving me I shall stop loving you little by little.
If suddenly you forget me do not look for me, for I shall already have forgotten you.
If you think it long and mad, the wind of banners that passes through my life, and you decide to leave me at the shore of the heart where I have roots, remember that on that day, at that hour, I shall lift my arms and my roots will set off to seek another land.
But if each day, each hour, you feel that you are destined for me with implacable sweetness, if each day a flower climbs up to your lips to seek me, ah my love, ah my own, in me all that fire is repeated, in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten, my love feeds on your love, beloved, and as long as you live it will be in your arms without leaving mine.

13歲時開始發表詩作，1923年發表第一本詩集《黃昏》，1924年發表成名作《二十首情詩和一首絕望的歌 Veinte Poemas de Amor Y una Cancion Desesperada》，自此登上智利詩壇。聶魯達的一生有兩個主題，一個是政治，一個是愛情。他早期的愛情詩集《二十首情詩和一首絕望的歌》被認為是他最著名的作品之一。他的詩歌既繼承西班牙民族詩歌的傳統，又受到波特萊爾（Charles Pierre Baudelaire）等法國現代派詩歌的影響；既吸收了智利民族詩歌特點，又從美國詩人沃爾特·惠特曼(Walt Whitman)的創作中找到了自己最傾心的形式。
聶魯達對中國和中國文化很有興趣，一生中曾經三次到中國。 1928年他以外交官身分赴緬甸上任時，出發來中國，給宋慶齡頒發列寧國際和平獎，此行中，他還見到了茅盾、丁玲、艾青等文學界名流，進行了友好的交流。 另外在訪問中國時他得知自己的中文譯名中的「聶」字是由三隻耳朵（繁體中文的“聶”）組成，於是他說：“他有三隻耳朵，第三隻耳朵專門用來傾聽大海的聲音。”◠‿◠ 💋
