Sooooo I know you're not officially playing, but I have an extremely important question: what do you think of Penelope Bunce's knees?

Marta, thank you so much for this ask! I was so excited that I *did* decide to officially play. And thank you for this particular ask because Penny’s knees are extremely special.

I LOVE Penelope Bunce’s knees. I love that they’re cute; in my head they’re round and fat and dimpled and squeezable, too. We really don’t get nearly enough knee appreciation or knee love.

I love that Penny gets to have cute chubby knees, and that she gets to have a partner that loves this about her—doesn’t just like it or tolerate it but lists those knees actively near the top of his list. The world is not often kind to chubby bossy woman-presenting people with brown skin, and Penny deserves to have people in her life that are actively like: “YES. Please keep doing all of your demon summoning and defacing of rental walls. I will be in charge of providing your big brain with Pret sandwiches and kisses.”

Hi Lemon, I want to hear you go off about the Grimm family :D

Oooo that’s a good one. Let’s start from least to most important:

Malcolm: handsome (albeit in a cruel and elderly way). That’s enough about him!

Twins: seems like they lean into the creepy Shining thing, which I respect.

Swithin: knows a good bird when he sees one.

Mordelia: honestly love the way she forces herself on Baz constantly. She’s paving the way for Malcolm to have less horrible parenting tendencies, and she should be commended.

Daphne: the true MVP. A woman so disrespected that she is compared to a *glass of water* and yet she takes care of all her kids including the one she didn’t birth. When she marries Malcolm, Baz is a moody teenage vampire whose mom was literally murdered in front of him and who deeply admires his aunt who *hates* her. And then he goes off to boarding school and she starts popping out babies. She could have chosen to not engage with him much and instead she strives to see that he has as normal a life as she can—Christmas traditions, a cell phone, sports gear, school trips, etc. She works on getting Malcolm to be a better dad. She pays attention to all the little details no one else was going to, and manages to establish a loving relationship with Baz in a situation that seemed ready to doom her to evil-step motherhood. She welcomes Simon even after he destroyed her home, because he’s special to Baz. Even being sucked in by SSR, she was motivated to try to provide better for her family. Another mom trying the best she can in a tough situation (Rainbow owed us some good moms after killing off Lucy and Natasha).

Verdict: Daphne and babies are Lemon approved; Malcolm—I’m watching you 😒 stick to Basil Pitch’s Diary where you belong

1. Introduce Your Main Character (MC) Your reader needs to know who the MC is because it helps them interpret the things that happen to them. Ideally, you want to introduce your MC’s name, gender, age range, and disposition as early as possible—at least on the first page, if not the first paragraph. Please note that this doesn’t mean listing all these things off—no expository paragraphs of description, and, heaven forbid, DO NOT have your character look into a mirror and list off their physical features. Work it piecemeal into the action and dialogue tags. Get creative. 2. Set Expectations You need to let your reader know what kind of story this is going to be. Will your MC have a snarky inner monologue throughout the book? Then your first paragraph better end with a sarcastic one-liner. Will there be a lot of swearing or gore? You better showcase that on the first page so the reader knows what they’re getting into. Basically, you don’t want to ambush them with these things later. Not only does this give readers who won’t like your style an early cue that this isn’t their type of book (you don’t want them, anyway, trust me), it also gives people who WILL gel with your style a reason to keep reading. 3. Start with Action Seriously. Start as close to the inciting incident as you can—start as it’s happening, if possible. Don’t worry about explaining everything.
