In the dry, gravel garden, Leonotis nepetifolia (Christmas candlestick, lion's ear) provides bright orange whorls of flowers into autumn. The native range of this species is Africa and the Indian Subcontinent but it is considered an invasive plant in other countries with similar climates and has often established on waste ground.

Originally from South Africa, it has mild psychoactive effects compared to cannabis and exhibits some similarly beneficial health effects used in therapeutic doses. At higher levels it becomes toxic.

Until the cold weather arrives the Leonotis leonurus (lion’s tail, lion's tooth, lion's ear) keeps flowering into the late autumn. This semi-evergreen shrub is native to South Africa and Southern Africa where it makes a large shrub. In the U.K. it is treated more as a tender perennial grown for the whorls of orange flowers.
