Isn't it so weird how Victor Hugo made them all get a drink and laugh after this instead of continuing to describe a variety of tragedies happening due to societal issues? I was a bit taken aback. Been having a lot of les mis brainrot/obsession and I am sorry to my 8 followers who have to endure it. Tried to go for a more book accurate Javert and struggled so hard on Valjean! I know he doesn't have white hair at this part yet but I feared he would not be recognisable without it. I also feel like a beard, while maybe not fitting his function as mayor at this moment does fit his character so much. I don't recall if there's any description of him at this point in the book.
