Three years ago, I was honored to present at @upwardbound Career Exploration Day. Students had their choice of panels containing experts on professions they most desired. After a wonderful day of questions and advice, I was stopped in the bathroom by a student. She was too shy to raise her hand and ask me a question in front of her classmates, she said. She asked me for advice on beginning her career. I gave her some tips on securing internships, told her how a 'no' from one company only means a 'yes' from another company, and explained how even the best in the business had been turned down (at least a few times.) Her spirit lifted. Then, she asked the words I'll never forget. "Ms. Christina, is there any way we can stay in touch? If you wouldn't mind... and you have the time, I mean... if... " All of a sudden, she seemed embarrassed and got quiet, fidgeting with her hands. She seemed to think I was more important or too busy for her. Nothing could be further from the truth. "Oh, yes! Please! Please stay in touch. Here!" I shoved my business card at her. "Please, email me anytime you want. My business number is on there, too. If you need guidance or any help at all, don't hesitate to reach out. I wish I had someone to help me when I was your age. I sound crazy, but hopefully when you're my age you'll pay it forward, too. So, anything you need from me--just ask! It's not a problem at all. I'm so flattered you asked me for help. Thank you!" I am proud to announce Miss D completed an internship in childhood education last summer, currently works in childhood healthcare, and she just asked me for a recommendation letter for a management position.
