Fun fact about me: I can taste sounds. (Lexical gustatory synesthesia). However I did not actually realize this was a unique trait until early 2024 when I asked people what was the grossest name they came across and they all looked at me as if I sprouted an extra head.

It's mostly names I have this with. My deadname (rip queen you were a real one) tasted like cantelope, but the alternative pronouciation tasted like eggs. My chosen name tastes like goldfish.

My user tastes like really thick and kinda floppy french fries. But the charater it was named after, Tawnyspots, tastes like fresh bread.

A lot of it is letter and sound association, however. Like most names starting with "A" taste like some kind of apple. Alice is a slightly mushy apple, and Allie is a granny smith apple. Aaron however is burnt pepperoni.

When I told my coworkers about it and the flavor of their names and they were mildly concerned for me.

Ajsgahsgjags it’s so fun + weird hearing you say that you think my synesthesia is cool XD Because it is Just How I’ve Always Been to me… literally I remember watching Go Diego Go as a tiny little kid and tasting blueberry muffins because someone in the show said the word prairie. It’s always been my brain so it’s strange (in a fun way) to hear people talk about lexical gustatory synesthesia like it’s Cool. It’s been really neat discovering a Word for how my brain experiences words & turns them into imaginary food, because before last year I really didn’t think about it much + didn’t realize other people didn’t experience it!

Anyways, to answer your question: no, not every word has a flavor! But yes, certain words that do have flavors can have a much stronger taste than other words that have flavors. For example, the word paper tastes so incredibly strongly of turkey to me, and every time I see the word or speak the word I taste turkey. The word ghost tastes like mashed potatoes, but it doesn’t have nearly as strong of a flavor as paper does, and sometimes I can read/see the word without tasting anything, if I read or see it too quickly.

And sometimes words Immediately have a taste, and other times I have to think about the word for a couple seconds in order for a taste to solidify in my mind. It really depends and I can’t figure out any pattern to it XD

Oh! And another thing: accents have flavors, too! French accents drift between fluffy pancakes and vanilla yogurt, depending on the way it’s spoken. Spanish accents taste so strongly of warm, unsalted tortilla chips it’s crazy. I remember when I was little, there was this specific guy on the Christian radio station who would sometimes pop on and say a quick something, and every time he spoke I got happy because his Spanish accent was super tasty to me 😭😭

But in the same way, not every accent tastes like something. I don’t taste anything for American accents, for example, or Jamaican accents.

Hey!! A quick question for fellow systems with synesthesia,

Does it effect each of you in a different way? Like, do you all get something different from it, and do some experience it in a lessened degree or higher degree than others??

We have synesthesia, but we've never thought about this, and I obviously can't remember or know what the others in our system experience. We were going to try and document it within our own system, and probably still will, but I'm curious about others as well!! I’ve seen a few other people in the synesthesia community doing this, so I thought I’d throw this out there! Incase anyone was curious! If you want to know anyone specific, or a song or something, you can DM me or send me an ask!

For context, I have a type of synesthesia called Lexical Gustatory Synesthesia. It affects around 0.2% of the population, and pretty much means I can taste sound (though it can also be tasting words for others.) I’ll also be making a post to do with the colors of their names! So look out for that! :D

Yes!

There's a type of synesthesia called "lexical-gustatory". Synesthetes with this type taste words, or associate tastes with words - and the taste isn't necessarily connected to the meaning of the word. Also, the taste doesn't have to be any specific food; it entirely depends on the person. It sounds like you may have this type of synesthesia, based on your description.

Also, I've heard of many other synesthetes having tastes for other things, such as numbers or sounds!
