A stupid text message to stupid Yessenia, who’s too stupid to have managed a decent job and who’s stupidly developed a crush on an unavailable boy who’s always around. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
The apartment is empty, and the sound of her footsteps echo off the unfinished ceiling as she makes her way into the kitchen. Her favorite mug sits on the counter in front of the coffee pot, washed and dried, even though she thinks she left it dirty in the sink last night, and a post-it note on it reads, “smiley face.”
