I watched Paris is Burning last night
Can’t stop thinking about it. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s a documentary about the drag scene in New York in the late 80’s.
It covers drag, homophobia, racism, transgender issues, poverty, etc.
The mix of queer identities!
I then looked for other lgbt documents and found there is a massive lack of AFAB focused things :( Thanks sexism
But anyway! I’ve spent time today thinking about queer things and that we definatly need more love between the lgbt community! I understand separate spaces are important sometimes but so are shared spaces.
Sometimes there is so much policing of terms and identities. Seeing something from 30 years ago shows how much language is constantly evolving. Someone 30 years ago might have called themselves a transvestite, whereas now we might call them a trans woman.
I’ve got hate for using the word butch to describe myself as I’m not a lesbian, I’ve got hate for using the word trans. I used the term ‘not 100% straight’ for years as bisexuality is rarely represented and when is it, it’s negative.
I’ve been told i can’t be a true feminist as I’m not a lesbian.
I’ve met lovely trans women and I’ve met a not so nice trans woman. My transgender wife reconises herself as trans woman not woman but that that is a valid identity that deserves respect. I’ve met autistic trans people, I’ve met not autistic trans people. I’ve met women who love being women, I’ve met women who are indifferent to being women.
I’ve met a woman with Turner’s syndrome (single X syndrome) who was proud to be a woman despite being infertile and having to take hrt.
I’ve met feminine lesbians, I’ve met unfeminine lesbians.
I think we should stop policing. Yes there some annoying teenagers calling themselves ridiculous 'genders' like agenderstarfliudflux or whaterver but that's just it, it's teenagers. They will either grow out of it or find their identity. Where is the line between non-binary and binary? A person's identity is they're own. For me, is it my eating disorder or the comments from my mother and others that makes me question if i want to transition? Does it matter? I like the terms queer, genderqueer, femme ftm, female bloke, camp, androgyne. I don't want surgery but testosterone is tempting sometimes. We should stop the hate between lesbians and trans people, stop the misogyny of gay men, etc. Years ago, people started to reclaim the v word queer, why are people trying to censor it again? A character in Sense8 (a trans woman, played by a trans woman) writes a blog and one of the things she writes about is how she thinks that we should get rid of the alphabet of LGBT as just use one term. Maybe she is onto something. I could go on. Idk exactly what my point was but i just wanted to get some thoughts out! Scary thing is, i bet I'm going to get hate for this spew of thoughts
