Random patrons eyeing me judgmentally because I’m painting or cutting something or using glitter for a children’s program at work: Oh, are we having fun?
Me, a sweaty, frustrated library clerk with a hand cramp:

"What about you? You won't be able to use it." Reinite points out, looking at the sickly Elf before her. Was he an Elf?
It would be rude to assume...

"Alright. I'm coming, I'm coming." The pirate lass says with a groan as she stretches.
"Can't keep a tune, anyways."

OK here we go!

Vyera felt the grass pricking through her sleeping bag, then the dagger pricking tenderly against her carotid. Her eyes flew open to find two dwarves, clad in sooty grey. They said not a word, did not identify themselves. They didn’t have to. Vyera knew the particular whiff of Carta agents intimately. It seemed they weren’t ready to let her go so quickly, after all.
The dagger pressed harder. That was more than enough to spur her into action. She kicked the blanket over her first assailant’s eyes, then grabbed her daggers and stabbed them in the chest, putting her full weight behind the blow. The second lunged; she turned and dodged. The mace blow glanced off one arm, sending pain ringing up the bone. She turned upon them, fighting furiously until she managed to sweep one of their ankles, sending them sprawling. Before they could recover their breath, Vyera’s knee was in their stomach forcing the last dregs of it out.
“Who sent you?!” she growled. “Dogjaw? Guran? If it’s Guran I’ll castrate that nuglicker myself--” The assassin only stared, part defiant, part scared shitless. Her thoughts were interrupted by a raw scream, followed by a roar, frighteningly near--a crack--a wet thud.
Vyera turned as a large shadow fell over her and her quarry. The Iron Bull held a limp dwarf with their face busted in in one meaty hand, while the other adjusted his underclothes. “Looks like a man can’t even take a piss in peace now.”
“Or sleep.” She turned back to the second assassin, only to find them limp and foaming at the mouth. She smelled the harsh fumes of poison on their breath. “This one preferred dying over telling me who sent ‘em.” She kicked the corpse onto its face, rubbing her bruised arm. Why was everything suddenly so cold? Bull turned her around by the shoulders, peering at her in the weak moonlight. Was that--concern?
“You okay, boss?” he asked.
“I’m fine,” Vyera replied, failing to keep the quaver out of her voice as she gripped his wrist, squeezed once. It was not fear that unsettled her; only the realisation that her first thought had been where’s Bull? Is he all right?

Send me “Librarian!” + a number and I’ll grab the closest book, flip to that page number, and make us a starter using a random line of text from said page

“S-O-S: three short dots, three long ones, three short ones again.”
"But even that doesn't explain my suddenly being able to speak Russian."

“I thought you did well,” he said, reshouldering his jacket. “I only stepped in when it seemed like you needed backup.” (Adverbs, pg 23, by Daniel Handler)
