Idk if this is a weird question and feel free to ignore it, but which sections of a library do u think each member of the 118 would gravitate towards? I got suddenly curious and I know not all libraries are the same, but I remember going to my city's one and being fascinated with the old newspapers while some of my friends were more interested in other parts

AHHHH anon, this is the most delightful question!

buck, i think we all know, is a self-help books guy, but i think he also goes into random deep dives in the popular science section. he once cleaned out his local branch's entire section on parasitic insects. he has also never returned a book on time in his life, but the librarians like him enough that they keep letting him get away with it.

i believe in my heart that eddie is a secret romance novel enthusiast, but he's a little embarrassed about it - self checkout is a boon. he also likes thrillers - anything that's fast-paced and easy to pick up and put down. he likes to visit the seed library on a regular basis, even though nothing he's tried to grow has survived yet.

bobby (RIP) was a lover of cozy mysteries, but he'd also regularly make use of the cookbook sections, and the librarians would set aside any new ones that they thought he might like; he'd bring them homemade snacks sometimes in gratitude. he also used the tool library when he had a home improvement project going - it was just practical.

chim likes true crime, but he's a real fiend in the movie section, and he's another frequent user of the tool library and other special collections. the day he found out that he could check out an atari was the most beautiful moment of his life.

hen, i think, is the only one of them who's much of a serious reader, but she mostly visits the library with her kids these days. she likes the collection of membership passes for museums and local attractions, and she also likes to nose through any oddball special collections or local history materials her local branch might have.

We are all aware that libraries across the United States are under attack. Thanks to groups like Moms for Liberty and other outspoken “concerned citizens,” there has been actual legislative action at multiple levels of government to limit what libraries can do and provide to their communities. Even in the places where there hasn’t been that kind of action, those same concerned citizens have mounted acts of intimidation to instill fear and block access...In light of this, I’ve heard many iterations of the same question: how can we help? What do libraries and library staff need right now?

Working at a library is such a wild experience because you'll regularly run into two incredibly different extremes of patrons.

Patron 1: "Oh priestess of the books, I am but a lowly worm in your holy presence. I loathe to take the space within your eyesight, though I must."

Me: "Oh, don't worry about it. How can I help you?"

Patron 1: "But it pains me greatly to divert you from thy divine tasks."

Me: "I am literally paid to help you here. That is literally my job."

Patron 2: *Banging a spoon on a pot* "I PAY TAXES!! SUCK MY DICK!!!”

so currently my library is dealing with a series of culprits who just...shuffle the books and stack them vertically (instead of leaving them alone) and I *know* it's a pain but objectively this is some sitcom level bullshit that the main characters are either responsible for OR are getting asked to help investigate

either way, I'm enjoying whatever the outcome is because I'm not paid enough to care
