It seems odd to begin this project by posting a book at the "end"(?) of a series, but when have I ever done anything the proper way? Bonus photo of my reading nook where I finished this over Winter Break. "Buffy meets Sabrina the Teenage Witch meets Adventures in Babysitting" "Spells Like Teen Spirit", which is the best pun on a title ever IMO, takes the Teen Witch YA trend and rockets to a strong finish to the adventures of Esme and her Teen Fashionista coven of Sitters--supernaturally-gifted teens tasked with protecting the innocent from evil. The story opens up with Esme reeling from her recent defeat of the evil Synod organization, her missing Pit Bull, Pig, and her magical boy-crow crush being MIA. To cheer her up, her girl gang plots a Galentine's Weekend of thrifting, asian fusion food, and crashing the school dance in Goodwill designer chic. Except there's a hot new band blowing up the town's shady bar scene, and yet their musical is terrible...and that's not even where things begin to get weird. Coupled with trying to undo her mother's curse AND finding the perfect outfit to expose a Red Magic cell Esme is in for the greatest challenge of her Sitter life. I really liked this series! Theres a lot of 90s throwback fun and humor and Esme's voice is both sarcastic and sweet. A lot of the mysteries were wrapped up but there was still some enticing plot threads left if the author ever wanted to pick it up again. I highly recommend you start with "The Babysitters' Coven and the follow up, "For Better or Cursed". Long weekends after a full week at school (our first in three weeks due to school being canceled for bad air quality due to fires) are sooooooo needed. - 📚. A friend and fellow librarian recommended thus series to me, so I am reading them before donating them to my library. Books that make history come alive are something I’ve always loved. - 📚. SYNOPSIS: With the rise of the Berlin Wall, Gerta finds her family suddenly divided. She, her mother, and her brother Fritz live on the eastern side, controlled by the Soviets. Her father and middle brother, who had gone west in search of work, cannot return home. Gerta knows it is dangerous to watch the wall, yet she can't help herself. She sees the East German soldiers with their guns trained on their own citizens; she, her family, her neighbors and friends are prisoners in their own city. - . But one day on her way to school, Gerta spots her father on a viewing platform on the western side, pantomiming a peculiar dance. Gerta concludes that her father wants her and Fritz to tunnel beneath the wall, out of East Berlin. However, if they are caught, the consequences will be deadly. No one can be trusted. Will Gerta and her family find their way to freedom? - 📚. Has anyone read this or the other books in the series? They cover WW II and the Russian Revolution as well. May have to read the other two as well. - 📚.
