How to train your dragon 3 has an inherently flawed concept. Part 3 - Why this isn’t the Light fury’s fault

Okay so before we start I am fully aware this is an unpopular opinion however just to be clear here, I’m not defending the Lightfury’s design or place within the story. I do think a lot of it is cheap and I will be going over both in my next post, I just do not feel she as a character has as much fault as people pretend and by constantly promoting this idea that you’re standing against sexism and misogyny by blaming everything only prominent the female character in the film (Yes I see Astrid and I stand by what i said) you’re in turn incidentally promoting the same sexism. Httyd 3 was not ruined by her alone, and even if she were removed entirely and Toothless just left for a “call of the wild” motif you probably wouldn’t like it still because httyd 3 is not a good movie.

When people talk about how “Sexist” the design is of the character and how SHE specifically ruined the entire movie I don’t think they’re making the point they think they are. how to train your dragon 3 is a bad movie because they had the berkians leave berk for zero reason when they’ve faced worse threats before, its a bad movie for dogifing toothless to the point he a DISABLIED dragon who understands basic speech and can comprehend his own disability would actively choose to destroy his rider’s leg and use it as a chew toy, its a bad movie cause the end theis of a franchise that’s message was built upon accepting each other’s differences and learning to co-habit with not only your fellow man but fellow species regardless of what faults you think they have be it fear of them with dragons and underestimating them with Hiccup, is that none of that matters and that dragons are actually precious little puppies who need to be hidden away from all humans cause some people are and will forever be incapable of learning basic empathy.

When people say the 3rd movie’s faults are all on the light fury cause she had the “Gall” to try and get Toothless to live with her or not like Hiccup, but then literally choose to come back to new berk with him when she saw how deep their bond was. It feels really hollow to make a point about sexism whilst doing that. Cause you’re being sexist for blaming an entire movie‘s faults on one female character who would have come back to New Berk with zero issues had Grimmel not somehow mangaed to hide in literally the tallest pile of grass in the entire series and capture her and Toothless.

Am I saying it’s wrong to hate her? No of course not its pixels on a screen, hate her as you will. Am I trying to ignore the fact that She (Along with Toothless) were so heavily pushed into marketable designs for this film that make them look poorly designed and the light fury got the short end of the stick? No it’s a completely vaild point to make. I just feel like its not as bad as people pretending it is and it’s very basic to go on about “standing against poorly written sexist characters. Who are intentionally ruining the entire series and split up Hiccup and Toothless”. When she’s not.

Common arguments I hear are:

“The lightfury is abusing Toothless in their “date” scene” - She really isn’t, the Lightfury is preforming a matting dance, when animals do this they expect minickery when Toothless not only doesn’t repeat her but begins advancing towards her in a threatening manner (eyes slitted, vocalising with low growls and quick jumping movement) the lightfury swatts at him to correct him. Her swatts do not draw blood nor go in for an attack, she as many other animals do sets a boundary with his approach in the wrong way makes sure he doesn’t come closer and then disengages herself to leave. When he doesn’t copy her she allows him to show her a new way. Again only correcting him never attacking. Animals cannot talk this is how they set boundaries

“The lightfury hates Hiccup and wants to kill him.” - again no, she does attack hiccup when she first sees him because this was directly after being captured she sees all humans as a threat. When she tries to throw him off Toothless its important to note she doesn’t even shoot him something we know she can do, she directly throws him off. Then when Toothless saves him the lightfury never attacks him again only fleeing. Then choosing to

“Everything that went wrong is because of her” - literally the only thing she does is lead them to the hidden world, which at the end of the film she even chooses to leave for toothless only getting caught because Ruffnut lead an entire fleet to them.

The Lightfury didn’t cause Grimmel to attack Hiccup, they just became too well known. She didn’t lead them to New berk. She tried 1 time to split up Hiccup and Toothless but once he saved Hiccup all she ever did was try to lead Toothless away until eventually realising that wasn’t an option and going back to new berk to live with both of them. Because this is not her fault and saying everything is her fault takes away from legitimate criticism for her design and later actions towards her character like homecoming in which they do actually make everything her fault because now she’s rewritten to truly hate humans and hiccup especially.

I wanted to.....redesign the light fury from THW

I kinda kept her finalized design seen in the movie but adding some details so she looks like she belongs in the HTTYD universe...i think she can pull off a "spine/spikeless" design without feeling out of place if she was actually put to care and not a dragon made purely for existing as a heavily feminized and sexist version of the night fury and a love interest for toothless, stated in the artbook itself that shes not even supposed to look reptilian because its not feminine enough

Hell i even added SOME "feminine" features like the eye shadow and the faint heart shaped pattern on her tail fin but thats literally it, not the pinkish eyes though i just thought its a nice contrast from her blue tone and makes her kinda look like an albino (it wasnt intentional)

I think people tend to heavily use that one concept art of the lightfury which im not against, i kinda wanted something a little simpler

I truly believe that the light fury lives in a snowy mountain area, not a semi-aquatic dragon or a cave dweller... for me it doesnt make sense for a cave dweller having to..."disappear" or an aquatic creature not having scenes that are related to water

And yeah, the males also look like this- but in general both male and female have their own unique patterns, so the heart shape pattern on her is a pattern unique to herself and not the entire species or even the females
