Interesting theory about this “naughties nonsense” from a comment in a discussion forum:
Tumblr doesn't make any money
Oath/Verizon therefore wants Tumblr to die
If they formally kill it, they have to take a write-off on their financial statement and it will look bad to Wall Street
If they just drive everyone away by being awful, they can pretend that Tumblr is still worth something on their financial statements
