Adjusting her hair, Charity takes a deep breath before entering the Three Broomsticks and heading straight to the bar. She scans the crowded room, full of couples on dates, until her eyes settle on flaming hair she knows is even softer than it looks. She knows how it looks all tangled up after hands have run through it, how her lips look when kiss bitten. She knows the spots that make her entire body shiver beneath her when kissed. She knows her favourite book, how she likes her tea, how one of her biggest fears is her sister hating her and that being in love with a girl will only drive her further away. She knows how much brighter her green eyes looked as they said their goodbyes, holding onto each other for what felt like an eternity before Lily finally walked away, leaving her to collapse on the floor and sob at losing the love of her life. Charity knows this is the best thing for her, and she’s trying to respect that. But when she heard she had a date with Potter, who she has complained endlessly about until they became friends, she just had to know if it was true. And fuck, the not knowing was so much better than seeing them together. 

She doesn’t know how long she stares at Lily, and she doesn’t care how creepy others may think she is. Looking at her from afar is the only way she can get something of the woman she loves. 

There’s some shuffling at the table and Charity quickly turns around to not seem suspicious. A moment later, a familiar scent wafts towards her, and she smooths her lilac short skirt, the one that fits her like skin. She couldn’t help but dress up. If all she can do is look at her, she can at least make her long for her, make her imagine pushing her against the wall and snogging her senseless—cruel, but she is pathetically desperate for her attention. 

“You should go,” Lily says, monotone, after ordering two drinks. 

“Lils…” 

She turns to her. “No, Charity. I told you, we can’t- Just go, please.” 

The way her voice breaks on the last word shatters her heart. Charity resists the urge to cradle her face, to pull her in and tell her everything will be okay. But it’s not okay. Neither of them are okay. 

Smiling with tears in her eyes, she whispers, “I love you.” 

As she leaves Lily behind for good, she’s at least grateful that it’s him. Potter is kind and smart, arrogant and an arsehole at times, but a good person nonetheless. She deserves good.
