Chris Hondros From ‘A window on Baghdad’-2007

The series gives a feeling of claustrophobia due to tight framing from within the military vehicle but it also gives off a sense of detachment, this is due to the very limited view that we are provided and the photographer has purposly took this into consideration to show how the American military has failed to attempt to understand the complexity of Iraq’s society. Due to the design of the windows the occupants of the jeep can look out but people can not look in and this has provided an opportunity for the photographer to capture genuine emotion of the subjects within this small frame restricted by the armour, this feature has resulted in some very intimate portrait like photos and gives a basic understanding of this society despite it being a incomplete and ephemeral one. Hondros himself was aware of this and commented, ‘The view from a humvee window for all it’s apparent intimacy, it only provides a limited look at a complex country’
