So if I’m speaking Spanish, and I need to say an English word — like a name, brand, website, etc — I say it like a Spanish speaker

However, I hear a lot of speakers drop into a very native English accent in the middle of a sentence to say “el Starbucks” and whatnot (I love hearing it. Just a random completely English-sounding word in a Spanish sentence)

So I’m wondering…

From my personal observations I think native bilinguals do this more, but I’m interested in more data. Feel free to reply or reblog for a more detailed answer!

linguistics study on conversational style

Hello! I'm an undergrad linguistics student running a small study on American dialects and conversational style. I have decided that I am going to be posting everyday of my exam period in order to keep accountability for studying and to have something to look back on. I think overall I'm going to get around 33-4 points which is slightly lower than I had wanted when I started the IB but because I didn't come to school for most of the last three / four months of school, it's the most realistic grade I can achieve.

I have been studying a little bit over the past few weeks but not as much as I would have wanted to (for reasons mentioned above) so I'm really hoping to make the most of how much space there is between exams.

Tomorrow I'll be talking about how I'm studying for each subject + tips! The other posts will be more interesting than this, I just wanted to make a quick introduction!

Music And Language Survey

This is a survey conducted by a Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) student majoring in linguistics and conducting a study about the role and influence of music in second-language learning. This survey is for individuals who both currently are learning a foreign language and listen to music with lyrics in that language. The initials "TL" when used in this survey stand for "target language" (i.e. the language you are learning.) This survey will take approximately 10-20 minutes to complete. Has anyone picked up any words/accents/sentence structures that are used to perform wokeness? Like for example using an American dialect like AAE instead of your local dialect to gain popularity and signify that you’re part of the online “woke” community? Or how Brie Larson (and a lot of her younger fans) talks... I still need to analyse what exactly it is but something to do with short sentences that stress indexical words like “men” or “white people” makes her sound like she’s saying something really woke and true meanwhile it could be anything she’s saying, and it doesn’t even need to make sense. I’ve got a few things I’m looking at that I’m basing an essay on, just asking in case anyone has picked up on something I may not have noticed?
