If you haven’t heard of Johnny Utah yet, it’s high time you familiarize yourself with this fellow, as he’s obviously a fabulous artist on the rise. Aside from what seems to be a penchant for the Point Break (in which Johnny Utah is dashingly played by Keanu Reeves in the original film), this bedroom pop whiz from Philadelphia is also a dashing crooner with much suave panache when it comes to funk imbued swooners. Just listen to his latest single, HONEYPIE, an instantly hooking, sprightly shimmying dose of lo-fi funk and pop. The 23 year old singer songwriter and producer melds the gooey soulful charm of Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s more perky offerings (my mind turns to Hunnybee, in particular) with the smooth swagger of Mk.Gee on HONEYPIE, all with a playful teasing strut. The single is out now via AWAL, here.
