Pretty Canoe (Short Film Mini-Review)

Next up in my Fayetteville Film Festival Review series is a tense action/drama short film titled "Pretty Canoe".

Two prisoners, Terrance and Davis, have escaped prison and sought refuge at one of their cousins house. They plan to stay the night and then use a boat to escape to the Mexico border in the morning. Unbeknownst to them, there are many surprises in store that will derail their plans.

In addition to telling a good little story in only 20 minutes, the film also touches on the danger of relying on nostalgia to make one's decisions, so it's got a nice subtext to it as well.The film has a couple twists towards the end - one of which I saw coming - but the other was more effective and showed just how clever and quick-thinking one of the characters is once it's revealed, which was cool.

As long as you aren't squeamish about profanity and some mild violence, I definitely recommend this little short. It's a great little thrill ride.

Life itself is scary. One moment you are on top of the world, the next, you are too far down in the dumps to pick yourself up. The worst part is when people around you are just as unpredictable. You cannot expect anything from anyone, least of all reciprocation. It is not guaranteed. So you just have to do you, treat them with kindness, pick yourself up and soldier on.

Interview with our actor Phanathi Wonder from our latest local South African film called "eNjoli"

Mike Character Description

 Played by: Phanathi Wanda Mbiza

 His name is Phanathi Wonder Mbiza is one of the most versatile artists to emerge in PE, Kwazakhele in particular. He first appeared in HNP’s first movie production as ‘Gafari’ as a notorious drug dealer. He was so impressive that he landed himself another role in our upcoming local movie, ‘eNjoli’. In this latest HNP offering, Wonder plays the role of a quick-witted taxi- driver as the right hand of Skhulu the well-known taxi owner in Njoli. Wander plays Mike in the movie, Mike is an effective and efficient taxi driver doesn’t like time wasters even if it is his own passengers. He is easily losing his cool but is Skhulu’s favorite driver. He knows the quickest taxi routes in PE as any great taxi driver should. He seems to have an eye for business but takes too much of a risk by recruiting unscrupulous taxi drivers and this drives his boss ‘Skhulu’ crazy due to the cost associated with taking such risks.

Mike goes where ever Skhulu asks him to go. So that’s where he lands himself unintentionally in trouble. He is seen chasing after hardcore petty criminals and drug lords to keep Njoli taxi rank and the Kwazakhele Township safe. If that is what Skhulu wants as a respectable taxi owner in Njoli then Mike is in. But how safe will this kind of life be? Sustainable is it to be in somebody’s payroll while also putting your life at risk? There is only one way to find…..

 Phanathi Wonder “Phara” Mbiza chats with Athi at HNP studios in PE, South Africa.

 Phanathi Mbiza is a chilled out talented artist from Kwazakhele, Port Elizabeth. If he is not out in the streets working hard to make ends meet then you’ll find him the studio creating some beautiful music with the HNP crew. He went to Kwezi Lomso Comprehensive School, Zwide, PE. This is where he developed his love for Hip-Hop music. With an amicable and immaculate rap flow, Wanda is a rare breed to ever rock the mic. He has a stash of unreleased music with a fresh delivery. He loves football and Deep House and of course Hip-Hop music. In this interview, he shares his experience of being featured in two films by HNP. He also let us in how it was working Thabang Molapo (movie director) in the two films. Wanda a.k.a. Phara talks about his future in music, movies, and the role of art in his own life. His life revolves around making great music and is always in the studio recording and fulfilling his duties as a Studio Manager at HNP Studios.  

We had a great time with one of the best to ever come out of PE. Surely you will enjoy this episode just as much we enjoyed putting together for you.
