Not to have a repeat of Hordes Of Belial festival where I got way too drunk to remember everything for my review. This time I kept my head clear and liver unpolluted. The night was put on night is fundraiser for the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, and hosted in a signal black-spot of a venue just outside of the centre and in the industrial part of town. In a newly open place that are hoping to have more gigs on in the future which is great. The crowd especially was more numerous than some gigs I’ve been to, but for a out of the centre gig it filled up much more than i was expecting, even attracting a few out-of-townees.
Dirty Judas opened the night with their own stance of groove metal, full of the right mix of technicality and speedy thrashing sections, that fired up the night off to a banging start! Perhaps it was the shape of the room or something not right with the levels but every time the vocals were needed it seemed become muffled. This seem to be less and less noticeable as the night went on so it might of been just my hearing. I also noticed the right hand side the solo guitars was a bit muddy too but this didn’t stop them put on a bloody good show.
Full of great heavy and soul moving grooves that would keep most crowds moshing away! But being on first though meant most people kept back and observed from afar which is a shame as these guys work best working off a good crowd.

Heavy metal warriors Tusk were next, playing assorted set of covers including tracks by L7, Motorhead’s “Limb by Limb”a and even Sepultura “Roots” amongst others, each injected with their own unique style and attitude. As well as playing a few of their own original numbers, they are the ultimate party metal band, full of fun a really look like that they love what they do, but this night seems things were a little bit off.
I’ve seen these guys a few times now and every time they do a great job every time. Funny, heavy and rocking throughout. This time they had a few issue to marred their normal upbeat quirkiness. It all started when the A-string snapped on vocalist Ash’s guitar mid-song! That dampened the set, though it was something that could not be helped really. This did give them a chance to show off with them improvising a jam drum-bass duet tune while Ash tuned guitar number 2.
Sound issues were also present like persistent gremlins, marring the vocals for the most part but overall they were very entertaining and gave some nice tunes. Even their original tunes a cross between a Motorhead speed metal and a grunge alternative that is rooted in a 90′s sound that is rocking and refreshingly fun as the band is.

Bloodshot then played next and had a lot less of the sound issues that plagued to other bands. The vocals still were not the clearest, but this band is not one that care too much about the Vocals, its about the Jägermeister and weed driven jams. Edging on brink between southern metal and stoner rock in sound and with a health dose of sludge metal as the base.
As well as giving more banter than the other bands so far, keeping things light and even got a few laughs. Instead of playing the allotted set of 30mins they went on to play an hour set instead which looked like it took a lot out of the band, all of them seem pretty exhausted and extremely sweaty by the end.
Despite the extension they keep everything moving with a southern swagger playing song after song showing they are a band full of ideas and have a great spirit and work attitude. They just need to get it all down on “paper”. So come on guys: Hurry up and get more material out!

Next up we had a word or two from one of Sophie Lancaster’s friend Jojo talking about why we are all here to support: Sophie Lancaster Foundation.
In a clearly difficult and emotional speech to make she outlined what Sophie meant to her and how it has now inspired her and so many other people to do such great work like putting on this show. Sophie died in 2007 under horrific circumstances, but over 8 years later, and in her memory she manages to pack out a venue in such a tribute and testament to her and everything she stood for.
Last up headliner Virus unleashing some neck breaking Thrash metal. Once veterans of the thrash metal scene from 1986 and gaining some considerable momentum when they split up in 1990. Only to be reactivated in 2008 by main man Coke McFinlay (Guitar, Vocals) and now are back on track and banging on out with the tunes.
They play a brand of the Thrash that hits the middle ground between the new school revivalists thrash of say Gama Bomb etc. and the more serious classic bay area masters. In a way not too serious but extremely heavy and extremely fast. Every tune they played was an instantly head bang-able and full of moments that would of been great to pit to it seemed but almost everyone seem to keep their distance.
Unfortunately I had to leave this show early due to transport (getting by bus back to a the arsehole-of-nowhere town i live in) but i think i caught their set.
Violent but instructive fun.
