I hadn't realised that Matariki may actually be the first indigenous festival to be made into a public holiday (by a colonial government, I assume that means) in the world. I'm watching a discussion at work about the ceremonies associated with the occasion, and hearing that last year's national hautapu ceremony was watched by more people than live in Aotearoa! - because indigenous people around the world, on other continents, watched with interest and solidarity with Māori. That's cool - I hope it becomes a great example other peoples can point to.
