it’s labor day, but it’s also the end of the summer season. i have at long last written a new blog post about some observations around kitchen gardens in this exceptional year. . LINK IN BIO. . in the pic: my neighbor Theo and his spectacularly productive veg patch, with toms, zucchini, lettuce, onions, herbs... . #victorygarden #pandemicgardening #lockdowngardening #kitchengarden #blogpost #landscapedesigner #gardendesigner #gardencoach #gardentalk #gardenadvice #gardentips #quickstartyouryard #sustainable #planting #seattle #pnw #seattlegardens #pnwgarden #urbangarden #citygarden #americangarden #lovegardens #lovegardening #happygardening #localbusiness #smallbusiness #womaninbusiness (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CE2dAYUAtR_/?igshid=1c68vjbe7ly75
The end of August means sewing name tapes on school uniform and the Japanese anemones start flowering. The smaller pink ones in front of the window were new this year and were supposed to be darker pink. I’ve got my money back but think I will keep them. I seem to have spent a lot of this COVID year complaining about poor plants and seeds. Maybe the gardening industry has been so overwhelmed with demand that more mistakes than usual have crept in.

No my garden is not what I want it to be at this time of year. Things have gone wrong that were out of my control (clematis wilt) & seeds not coming up the colour they were supposed to be. I also have probably had higher expectations for garden colour in August this year (lockdown and all) than usual but meeting those expectations needed action last year. But it’s not a complete wash out.

Stuck record on cutting back here. Just accepted the lavender is done for 2020. Cutting back lavender is a bit of a balance, too light and the bush becomes huge and lax in future years, too hard and the plant suffers from frost damage. I hope this is somewhere in the middle. I find cutting back very cathartic. Everyone has had a stressful 2020, mine is far less stressful than for many, but I have some very upsetting things to manage/process this month. I had a bit of a freak out yesterday but today I am settling myself down by cutting back and deadheading. Hoping I will be less bonkers tomorrow as a result. Good thing it’s July, the cutting back month.
