A Mindful Mentor

Throughout the week-long externship with ICON Architecture, Joe has been an amazing mentor to all of the BAC students. Some of the great qualities Joe displays as a mentor are being a good listener, being patient, being knowledgeable, and giving constructive feedback. Similarly, some qualities we as externs need to reciprocate include willingness to learn, initiative, self-awareness, time management, gratitude, and professionalism. These qualities from us as externs, combined with a mentor's good qualities, set everyone up for great success throughout this week. One area where mentorship has occurred at ICON architecture this week was when we all showed Joe and other members of ICON our portfolios, and in return, they gave us constructive criticism on how we can improve them, from the perspective of fellow graduates and those currently in the workforce.

A Historic Client

Today, we had the opportunity to visit a project site for one of ICON Architecture's ongoing projects. The project was located in Athol, Massachusetts. This project involved the reuse of three abandoned school buildings originally constructed in the early 1920's. Through this project, ICON architecture will build 52 new52 new affordable housing units, some of which would be a senior living center, making the project accessible to all ages. This project was exciting because the building is designed for historic preservation, so many landmark school elements had to be kept in place, such as blackboards, shelves, and other fixtures. This project is truly an inspiration as it broadens our understanding of old buildings, not just to the land they sit on, but for the value these buildings hold in their walls, and presenting thepresentsld wimemories

It Looks Like A Job Site

Intercultural Competence is the cultural awareness in the workplace, interacting across cultures with respect and understanding. It is understandable that different cultures may think, work, and communicate differently. In the workplace, this can be of value to the company, as it allows a broader view and understanding of perspectives and/or situations. At ICON Architecture, Intercultural Competence is seen as a major strength of the firm; it can strengthen client and community relationships, create inclusive and equitable workplaces, and enhance teamwork in the office.

Workplace Community

Workplace culture is often not discussed, but it is at the core of a healthy workplace environment. This was my first experience working at an architecture design firm, and I had a great time and enjoyed the workplace environment. One of the activities I got to partake in today was the lunch lessons from the field meeting. This monthly meeting at ICON Architecture involves staff members sharing any issues or problems they have had recently. Then everyone else can give feedback and constructive criticism that could help that person. This exercise was particularly valuable because it allowed the whole firm to learn from each other's mistakes and grow together, strengthening workplace bonds and culture.
