Tbh I personally felt that Aangs grandchildren had too much screen time in the Legend of Korra.
Like they were nice to see in the beginning it was like "Aww kiddos" but we definitely missed out on seeing Aangs and Katara actual children, like I would have loved to see more of their oldest Bumi and Kya such a missed opportunity.
Fucking stuck with Tenzin and his family for 4 seasons.
The words echoed in Zuko's mind as he gingerly sat next to Katara on the medical bed. Even though he already had Izumi, his face still split into a wide smile as he looked down at the new Fire Nation princess.
The little bundle his wife had given birth to was smaller than Izumi had been, but just as healthy. Her skin was a lighter shade than her mother's, though he felt confident that it would darken as she aged. Opening her eyes, their daughter fixed a pair of brilliant blue orbs on him, blinking in curiosity.
"She has your eyes," he whispered, carefully putting an arm around Katara and kissing her forehead. The Fire Lady giggled softly, nestling her head against his neck as she pulled one hand from underneath their daughter and ran her fingers through the infant's hair.
"But she's got your hair. Your spirit too, if those kicks the last few weeks are anything to go by," Katara answered him, cradling their daughter's head.
Zuko chuckled, then lightly teased, "A real blue spirit then."
Katara laughed at their inside joke. Shifting to look at him, she held their daughter toward him and asked, "Do you want to hold her?"
"Yes, please," Zuko replied, and he carefully took their first child in his arms.
The little girl did have a strong life force. A perk of firebending was that you could sense some of a person's energy and the directions it went through the body, and their little girl definitely had a spark. Hers was similar to Katara's, actually, and he hoped she would be a waterbender like her mother.
"What do you want to name her?" he asked, looking up and meeting his wife's eyes.
Smile turning bashful, Katara glanced out the window for a moment, then turned back to him. "I was thinking, maybe we could name her after my mother. Kya."
Zuko smiled and nodded in agreement. "I think it's perfect for her."
Katara's eyes shined, and they would have kissed if not for the door creaking open on the far side of the room. Turning, he saw Bumi and Izumi poke their heads around the door, one over the other. They made a comical picture as they leaned around, then promptly fell over and on top of each other with dual "oofs".
Shaking her head slightly, Katara called out softly, "You can see your sister now, children. Just be careful not to disturb her too much."
"I told you it was a girl!" Izumi wheezed, struggling under Bumi's weight - which, all things considered, was a lot. Zuko had lately had to stop giving him piggyback rides, he was getting that big.
"Yeah yeah, I know, Izumi," Bumi grumbled, though he swiftly got off his slightly older sister. As they neared, he looked up at Kya in Zuko's arms and muttered, "I still want another brother."
Zuko felt a surge of sympathy for him. Although Bumi didn't hate Tenzin, he did miss what little they'd had before Katara and Aang divorced a few years ago. Zuko often heard him talking about the different brothers he knew at his school, and he suspected his stepson longed for that same companionship.
"We'll see what we can do, son," Zuko promised, reaching over and lightly patting the boy's head. Bumi's face instantly lit up, and he gave a toothy smile.
"In the meantime, this is Kya," Katara said, and Zuko shifted so the children could see her better.
For a long moment they both stared at her in awe. Then Bumi tilted his head and furrowed his brow.
"She looks....well -" he started, only to be interrupted by Izumi innocently stating, "Round."
"Well, you were round once, too, Izumi," Zuko chided with a chuckle.
She pouted, and Bumi looked at her seriously and said, "I was gonna say 'squishy-looking'."
Katara clapped both hands over her mouth, instantly dissolving into a muffled fit of laughter. As Bumi and Izumi shared quizzical looks, Zuko, stifling a laugh of his own, managed, "We'll explain it when you're older."
The two shrugged, then began asking if they could hold Kya. As Katara made sure each of them would be careful, Zuko thought about the family he'd been blessed with.
It was not the one he was born into, or the one he'd hoped for when he had married Jin so long ago. But now, looking at the love of his life and their children - their newborn and their children from previous lives - it felt right. It felt true.
As he watched Bumi play peek-a-boo with Kya and Izumi gush about how much fun they'd have with their little sister, Zuko looked at Katara and vowed to himself that he would never, even for a moment, take this family - this love, this gift - for granted.
I remember when I was younger when I first started watching House and I immediately became obsessed with Cuddy. And for the longest time I didn't realize most people who watched the show weren't as fixated on her as I was. I also hadn't realized yet at the time that I liked women.
And then years later, Lisa Edelstein voiced Kya on LoK and I was in love all over again
