MACDEN ANALYSIS INCOMING:

while I don’t really subscribe to the whole “they’ve been bangin the entire time” thing when it comes to macden, I do think they’ve been otherwise “involved” with each other the entire time. I think it’s more of a “they’ve banged before but it was like when they were way younger or some really intoxicated night” or maybe even “they were banging for a few years straight and then stopped” like I think the thing with them is there isn’t really consistency. and I think the more interesting question is not “have they had sex” but more “what kind of intimate moments have they had that were truly intimate for them both” like “have they ever been on the same page?”

and I think the answer has to be yes bc otherwise there wouldn’t be this level of tension between them. like they must both know what it’s like to be desired by the other and that’s why they’ve both individually gotten so crazed and manipulative and abusive when the other doesn’t reciprocate. and there’s this sense of like. trying to “get back” to a dynamic that works for them both. and I think if you’re gonna see them for who they truly are then you’ve gotta see the fact that in early seasons dennis pretty clearly waited around for mac to come to his senses for a very long time, watching him repeatedly return to the closet, and reject who he was. and simultaneously mac repeatedly crossed the barrier of consent in order to maintain a closeness with dennis that he wanted to exist again. but also at the same time he was struggling so deeply and profoundly with his own identity as a gay man and coming to terms with that for himself. and the “johnny” thing was dennis’ last (granted pretty insane but also very on brand) attempt at getting mac to see how much he wants him without letting go of his own comfort (like able to uphold a certain level of anonymity while still being like—hey dude, I really fucking want you). only for mac to completely shut down any real conversation they could’ve had about why dennis did it and instead rejecting dennis once again. like I fully believe dennis WANTED mac to realize it was him, like an elaborate test. but mac just couldn’t let go of how hurt he was by the whole thing (and I don’t blame him for that either). and now with sunny 17 we’ve gotten this return, this “back to basics” sort of dynamic between them once again and I think that has to mean that mac has finally realized what was going on. and not necessarily that they’ve talked about it, but I think he’s operating from a position of “hey, I see why this wasn’t working before” and actually allowing dennis to approach him more and being an equal partner in returning to what they once had. and conversely dennis can see mac’s effort and I think he’s just. tired. they’re getting older. they’re not the 20-somethings they once were. and I think it’s weighing on them both. and I can’t wait to see where we go from here.
