Sir. I have just arrived to this fandom, very late, and I am BEGGING for some sort of context regarding the aquatic animal commonly known as the "armfish."

The armfish comes from the historical/real life side.

The real James Fitzjames sent a letter to John Barrow Jr. from the Whalefish Islands in July 1845 where he recounts a story of going out in a canoe and tipping over. He also included a little sketch of himself cap-sized which includes a strange little fish with arms staring at him

The armfish quickly become beloved by Terror fandom bc, well, look at him! And he has inspired much art and crafting. I myself make plushie versions wearing sweaters and @jamesfishjames collects pretty much all of the armfish art

Milton Dammers held the knife aloft, the blade trembling in his grip. This was the final test, the initiation into a cult the name of which he couldn't even remember. There had been so many cults - could he be expected to remember all of them? His assignment was clear: do whatever it took to earn their trust, to infiltrate their ranks. If he had to burn their signs into his body, if he had to participate in wild orgies, if he had to kill...it was all for the greater good. He felt eyes on him now, on him, on his blade, on the sacrifice on the cutting board in front of him.

With a weak cry, he brought down the knife. The sacrifice, rather than being split neatly, rolled off the table and onto the floor. With ears burning, Milton picked it up and put it back on the cutting board. This time his slice was more restrained, and split the onion neatly in two. His eyes began to burn. What demonic influence was this? What power had the cult tapped into, to bring tears to his eyes? Who could make Milton Dammers cry? (The answer was, almost anyone). Angered, Milton finely diced the onion, whispering "Die...die...die," under his breath with each cut.

His task completed, Milton put the onion into a frying pan. If he could properly caramelize it, he would find the path to heaven...or so the cult said. Maybe this one would be real. Maybe, someday, he could be caramelized with some garlic and leave this awful world behind.

A. It was set to Comatose by Skillet (AKA the "What Do You Mean It's About Jesus?" band) and it was the first femslash fanvid I'd ever seen.

GOOD EVENING this is a very random question but there was a video once of three Dutch Christines singing Music of the Night to Henk Poort and the video appears to have disappeared but I was wondering if you had it or knew of it existing in some capacity, somewhere?

Oh, this was also something I mentioned in a previous post, mainly as part of a complaint about the prevalence of the “multiple Phantoms, one Christine” thing... but anyway, the answer is that yeah, I saw it missing a while ago and so far, no, I have not been able to find it. This is why I always try to download cool Phantom stuff now, sigh...

WHERE'S THE PLAYLIST OF THE FOLK SONG EVOLVING.

Now presenting “Spanish Rakes”, an incredibly self-indulgent playlist which really tracks the evolution of two things: tune and lyrics.  It’s not strictly chronological, but you can pick up common elements as it moves throughout different contexts/periods.

The playlist more or less goes like this: (European) folk ballad [text and tune] => Napoleonic sea shanty + later war ballad variants [tune, text in the last] => cowboy folk ballad [text and tune] => jazz standard(s) [text and its own tune].

It all started because my favorite sea shanty is 100% “Spanish Ladies”, and its most common tune comes from the folk ballad “The Unfortunate Rake.”  As it turns out, Smithsonian Folkways already published an entire album dedicated to the latter.  I like to go even further and intertwine the two.

FOLLOW UP QUESTION what is the absolute WORST thing you have ever watched simply because it had Mr. Buono in it? (I ask this having watched some very bad things for the sake of some very good actors and feeling weirdly nostalgic about that experience.)

Oh that’s easy! The movie “Up Your Teddy Bear” aka “Seduction of a Nerd” aka “Mother” (1970).

That thing was apparently shot in 1968 and from an interview I’ve read with Wally Cox it was mainly his endeavour to break away from the Mr. Peepers role so he produced it. It starred him, Julie Newmar and Victor, they all had been on Batman ‘66. It is a really, really weird unfunny sexploitation film…. that mainly feels like a perverts stream of consciousness. Victor plays the overgrown son “Skippy” of Newmar, who is the boss of a toy company and is called “Mother” by everyone. Cox plays a toy maker she wants to hire but he doesn’t want to work for her because she reminds him of his strict mother and idk he has a fetish for that?? Skippy has to hire and sent hookers after him to bribe Cox, when he fails he makes attempts to kill him that fail too.

idk, i thought the whole thing was grimy and boring. they also made Victor look weird and most of the humor comes from the size difference between him and Cox. I read that the guy who directed it never did another movie and Julie Newmar said that they didn’t even get paid.

I can only hope that they did it bcs they were friends and thought a movie together would be fun or did it as a favor for Cox.

THIS IS A REALLY NICHE QUESTION BUT DO YOU HAVE ANY IRISH-LANGUAGE MEDIA RECOMMENDATIONS???

You bet I do!

Tbh I don’t consume half as much Irish-language media as I should. I’m much better at reading than listening and it’s years since I actually studied it. BUT I do like watching documentaries. I don’t know if the RTÉ Player or the TG4 player are accessible to you (you might be able to get them with a VPN) but TG4 is an Irish-language tv station, and the player is full of Irish documentaries and dramas.

RTÉ is primarily English-language, but it does have the Irish documentary series Scannal, looking at historical cultural and political scandals. There are a good few of them available on the player and it’s an excellent insight into Irish history and culture. In between Irish-language analysis and retellings it also has wonderful archival footage. Most of the ones I’ve seen through the years are not available on the player, but a good one that is there that I’ve watched recently is Ep. 22: Mother and Child Scheme (x).

YouTube though is FULL of Irish-language stuff. Some generous soul who is too good for this world has uploaded the entirety of the short series Seoda, which plays entire short films from different times in the last 70 years sandwiched between brief analysis. The first episode, on two films by Liam O’Laoghaire, is here (x). It’s a lovely little series that’s not too heavy and includes subtitles. The same user, and some similar ones, have uploaded loads more Irish documentaries as well, and a couple of short films.

And ofc there’s music. Conradh na Gaeilge and the Choral Singers of University College Dublin are two YouTube accounts which have some lovely Irish singing and ofc there are loads more.
