God, I love modern paganism. I love that posts and blogs about witchcraft encourage you to do your own research, learn to listen to your own inner voice, be skeptical and curious, and discover a path that feels best for you.
i love getting to learn about ancient traditions, legends, and cultures not my own -- Hittite, Hellenic, Kemetic -- and see how others create their own paths.
I love the framework that reconstructionist paths have given me to create my own by exploring the fascinating history, myths, and spiritual and cultural traditions I never got to learn about as a Chinese American in a country that puts white histories on a pedestal. Chinese writing invented from the footprint of birds for the purpose of magic; Buddhist battle magic; secret Taoist societies that begin rebellions with 5 grains of rice.
I love that it allows me to be creative, connect with my roots, and learn the language of my family along the way. I love that it inspires pride in myself and my culture as I learn about funny, badass, and ferocious goddesses and women of Chinese history, when I’d been taught that Chinese culture was so patriarchal all along:
Longmu (the Mother of Dragons), Mazu (who defeated two generals who asked her hand in marriage in battle, then accepted their lifelong pledge of loyalty), Xiwangmu (the ferocious Queen Mother of the West), and many more.
Modern paganism has a lot of problems -- racism, cultural appropriation, isolation, stigma and persecution by the mainstream world -- but I love it for what it is: a journey of learning, creating, being curious and wonder-filled.
