I don’t think we talk about Akali’s traumatic upbringing enough. It’s laid out plainly in Runeterra, given passing mentions in Star Guardian, and likely occurred similarly in K/DA-verse. Her mother really did not love her, and that’ll affect someone in different ways forever.
I understand why people like to headcanon a happier family of hers with Shen and/or Kennen or even Kayn, but I’ve seen maybe one fanart of Mayym ever, and that’s like such an interesting dynamic to explore, I wish it was talked about it more for the alternate universes.
Star Guardian Akali will always be famous to me and I’ll never forgive those who hated her for… not wanting to die and to be with her best friend who is growing distant because of this newfound doomed destiny?? When that best friend has been the one person she has been able to rely on???
The passing mentions to her less-than-ideal home life haunt me to this day:
“‘She barely lets me in the house!’”
“…her mother’s admonishments of ‘useless’ and ‘delinquent’ failed to hit their mark for once…”
“When things at home had gotten really bad...”
“‘We didn’t do this, kid!’ ‘Akali,’ she corrected out of pure habit.”
[from Twin Stars, the prologue story to SG22, which is NOT mobile friendly anymore, if it ever was, luckily the wiki has it too]
Like hello!!! Mayym Jhomen Tethi you are not seeing heaven!
And then I’m sure no one thought that deeply of it, but K/DA Akali being “born into a martial arts dojo,” and then leaving to rap on the street cannot have earned her any approval from her mother. I definitely believe that Mayym detests her career even when she finds massive success.
I think she does a good job of masking the pain from her past, but she clearly always wants to be the best, always wants to prove her worth with her talents.
“More than I like to admit, I do get pretty angry sometimes,” from the Genius interview. Hmm I wonder who caused that to develop?
In conclusion, I think her difficult childhood is an extremely underutilized aspect of Akali’s character that absolutely shapes her personality as she grows older, and more of us (including canon writers) should consider that more often.
What's a favorite lore piece you've read for the sake of writing fics?

AI-COM/RSPN: ASSETS//FORCECON//IMPERATIVE
IMMEDIATE ACTION ORDER
YUGA SUNDOWN canceled by unauthorize
Oh goodie you gave me a good one here because I love to screech about this one whenever given the chance because I don't think a lot of people have ever noticed this.
This Grimoire card is from the Rise of Iron expansion in D1 and is one of Rasputin's Logs. It's what appears* to be his knee-jerk reaction to the Iron Lords' break in to Site 6 where SIVA is kept.
I reference this lore directly in my Isochronism fics, but it's also one of my absolute favorites regarding Rasputin, Felwinter, and SIVA because of some of the fascinating little details that, so many years further down the road into the story, we can pick out of it. I'll unpack it for us, but TLDR Rasputin is a fucking LIAR.
Rasputin likes to keep his records in some pretty purple prose code so I'll start by decoding most of the terms he uses here, and then I'll back up and loosely translate it for us all.
--
YUGA SUNDOWN- cancels all protocols for protecting humanity/activates MIDNIGHT EXIGENT
MIDNIGHT EXIGENT - long term counterattack protocol and moral structure change. Essentially allows Rasputin to ignore morals for the 'greater good'
[O] Means the Traveler /ie [O] Energy = Lightbearers
SKYSHOCK - usually there's other qualifiers attached to this but it indicates hostiles of an unprecedented scale
AURORA RETROFLEX - A defense subroutine - presumed to be for when Rasputin is directly threatened
SUBTLE ASSETS IMPERATIVE - Meaning this is in secret/does not escape Rasputin's records
SCRY OVERSIGHT - is an observation protocol but here is used in conjunction with SILENT VELES which means effectively "no oversight"
--
I'm going to start by pointing out that that very first line indicates SOMEONE gained unauthorized access into a terminal and managed to cancel at least one of Rasputin's protocols (YUGA SUNDOWN). Ballsy AF and imo pretty uncanny that they were even remotely successful. Rasputin immediately reverses this, but I can only assume the only person who would know to do this in the first place, let alone have the capabilities, would be Felwinter, especially among the Iron Lords, who appear to file in next in the very next line.
Rasputin records the arrival of the Iron Lords as a mighty surprise, and responds to them, in this record, as such, and as a threat.
This is incongruous with his admission later to Ana and the Guardian that he deliberately lured Felwinter (and his people) there deliberately. In this record, Rasputin has gone, "oh holy shit what the hell is that turn off all my moral structures I don't know what the hell those things are fire everything purge it all kill it kill it kill it!"
*And also I'm going to turn off my body camera (see SCRY OVERSIGHT + SILENT VELES) and don't ask permission or tell anyone ever (SUBTLE ASSETS IMPERATIVE)
Even though he made sure they found this vault.
This is all 1000% deliberate, premeditated, and a forged record my friends.
Edit: *semi- forged, or perhaps more accurately greatly bending the truth. Sylenth makes some damn good points in the comments that I kind of glossed over on my analysis and kind of took for granted but she’s right and it should be pointed out.
(also, worth noting, that REPLICATE.ELIMINATE.IMMUNIZE imperative sent to SIVA that is recorded here is different than what is recorded elsewhere also)
From bird to insect, fish to land animal. Every creature mentioned in Dragon Age, blighted and non-blighted, spirits and demon, created and possessed creatures alike are listed along with their breeds, subspecies, or variations.

today’s lore musings in my continued hobby of drawing comparisons between real world history and that of Runeterra:
I was wondering if there was a deeper reason as to why Piltover + Zaun and Bilgewater all have guns, but the other regions are still using swords. The answer is simple, and one I already knew: No, it’s a video game first and foremost, each region based on a specific aesthetic time period, and they’re doing their worldbuilding backwards.
PnZ is 1800s steampunk so they get guns. Bilgewater is pirates and pirates have guns as they’re also of a similar time period. Everywhere else is based on a time period that did not have or use gunpowder.
Except for the more recent elaborations on the origins of Noxus, with the Noxii tribes and Sahn-Uzal very clearly being based on the Mongols. [sidenote: please listen to His Name Is Sahn-Uzal. It’s so cool. It’s Tuvan throat singing.] The Mongols did use gunpowder, which was first developed and used in 10-12th century China.
The thing is, Noxus may have started as the Mongol Empire, but at present it is inspired by the Roman Empire, which did not make use of gunpowder. Noxus as it is today (both in and out of universe) was obviously developed first, and so guns or any other approaching-modern technology has never been involved.
Though it’s worth mentioning that Noxus does know of Piltover’s weapons technology, making use of chemical weapons in invading Ionia, and Ambessa seeking out Hextech upon its invention. The solid canonicity of all this is… unfortunately murky these days but even if Hextech is no more, we better still pray Noxus doesn’t start using rifles. Though I’m pretty sure their warships already have cannons. Whatever!
Also of note is Ionia is (or at least was) making Hextech-inspired guns post-Noxian invasion, namely the one that Jhin uses. So maybe they’ll have more to defend themselves with in the future? Doubtful, as Ionia stands firm in it’s time period inspiration, but it’s an interesting detail that once again reminds me I should read the old Jhin and Zed comics.
Anyways if anyone knows of guns making appearances in other regions please let me know as I do know a lot but I am not an actual encyclopedia, and I find this sort of thing very interesting!
Scientifically Justifying Why Kai'Sa's Eyes are Purple, and Why I Think Her Blood is Too
preface: I wrote this starting in reference to K/DA-verse Kai'Sa, but these justifications also work for her base Runeterra form. I'm also not a scientist or anything of the sort.
I started with trying to determine if purple blood was possible, and then went down the rabbit hole ->
Purple Blood:
sources: 1 2 3
Red blood in humans and blue blood in crabs and such is because of the specific element in their respiratory pigment molecule - iron in hemoglobin for humans, copper in hemocyanin for crabs. Purple blood happens w hemerythrin found in marine worms, but it sucks at oxygen transfer, as does hemocyanin in comparison with hemoglobin. So it wouldn't really efficiently sustain a whole human body like Kai'Sa's.
BUT! The Void doesn't exist irl, so we can make stuff up! I propose now that Void structures contain a new element — an addition to the transition metals section of the Periodic Table (like iron and copper.) One source (2) does propose that manganese could produce purple blood, but I think since we're dealing with something already not found on Earth, we can add to reality a bit.
This can also account for the more metallic look that the second skin takes in the MORE video, which is how I believe the Void more generally manifests in K/DA-verse, instead of the purple and dark chitin that happens in Runeterra.
Sidenote: the directors of the MV did say in a making-of talk (currently paywalled, but I did watch when it first came out.) that their understanding of the second skin (and what they were told, iirc?) was that it mimics the texture of what she touches, which is interesting, and aesthetically it matches the ALL OUT era (see: Ahri's tails) (omg kahri canon?) — but personally I'm choosing to stretch this to serve my own needs because these are my headcanons and I can do what I want lol. I believe the second skin has a silver scale-like texture but the Void still retains its purple nature to account for her blood and eyes, which I'll get to in a minute.
So with this new metal element, Kai'Sa's respiratory pigment molecules in her blood can reflect back purple blood and still let her live. I don't think it's a bright violet, still not far away from red, but distinctly a shade of purple.
"Wouldn't that mean her skin appears purple?"
Probably yeah... which should be more true for her Runeterra form where she's been more augmented by the Void, but for K/DA-verse where she still has a human skin tone? How do I explain that?
Simple: I'm making stuff up lol
My take on K/DA Kai'Sa's Void "infection" is that it was super quick, one hand in some Void-sludge, not a decade long stay underground like she goes through in Runeterra, so she arguably has been affected by it less. Maybe her veins and skin absorb different colors so it reflects back normally, like how Bel'Veth attempts to appear human, the Void wants to disguise itself? So when it comes in contact with humans it alters those so that the purple doesn't come through? Take your pick lol
(sidenote: this could potentially justify whatever the hell is going on with Kassadin's skin/armor/whoknows)
It's only oxygenated blood of crabs that appears blue, before that it's colorless, and hemoglobin goes from bright red to dull red in the same process, so it's not unreasonable to suggest that Void blood only looks most purple when it's oxygenated — notably, when Kai'Sa bleeds.
Eye Color:
my sources for this section were mainly multiple wikipedia articles that I will link in text when relevant. This paper was also helpful, as was this.
Kai'Sa has purple eyes, in both Runeterra and K/DA-verse, that I headcanon to have changed from brown as a result of the Void's influence.
No, the Void did not give her the fake tumblr purple eye condition, but in combination with now-purple blood, and Void creatures' lack of a need for melanin, it makes sense.
The Void is dark and underground, there's little to no light to be filtered or protected against - the general function of melanin. Runeterra Kai'Sa would definitely go pale after 10 years below. Also of note is that Rek'Sai literally doesn't have eyes; light is not important down there.
So with that in mind: Eye color is determined by melanin levels in the iris, and when there's less of it, less light is absorbed. The lower layer, the iris pigment epithelium is dark with melanin, above (meaning closer to the surface) which is the stroma of the iris, which also contains melanin, but the level varies and thus different colors are reflected back. The light that the stroma reflects back is of shorter wavelength, which is what causes blue eyes, but you know what visible light color has a shorter wavelength than blue?
Purple!
This reflection and light scattering is structural, not pigments — a structure the Void can alter.
This is what's fun about this, I can find a real world explanation that almost goes far enough, but then the otherworldly nature of the Void allows me to take the final leap! But also, I'm not done yet because the blood is relevant again.
"But if Void creatures lack melanin, isn't that albinism and her eyes would be red instead?"
Valid conclusion to draw, but I'm again pulling my This Isn't Real And I Can Do What I Want card, and say that not all of Kai'Sa's DNA has been altered, we're just talking eyes, not hair or other melanin-affected things, but also, the red eyes of albinism are the reflected light blood vessels of the retina showing through because of the lack of melanin in the iris and retina, and remember: Kai'Sa's blood is purple now!
Or, you know, all of this happens because magic and art design or whatever anyway
I spent about 5 hours researching and writing this, I hope it was enjoyable to read?
TL;DR: Kai'Sa's blood can be purple if she has a different element in her blood. Her eyes can be purple because the Void doesn't need melanin so her iris reflects shorter wavelengths of light.
So, I reached out to the publisher of the Dragon Age Tabletop RPG (ttrpg), Green Ronin, last month. I asked for some clarification in the canon status of some aspects in the ttrpg for my lore projects. If there was anything specifically crafted for the ttrpg and if any part was BioWare canon. I wanted to know for my own lore projects since I wanted a more definitive answer than what I found on that was vague and ambiguous.
Luckily I received a response. Though still a bit vague (and delightfully acknowledging BioWare’s own allergy to continuity), it is pretty straight forward.
The email is going under the cut because this got long. But tldr:
BioWare provides the lore, approves the stories, and the canon state of any information provided by BioWare is dependent on BioWare themselves.
So in essence, the tabletop is a valid lore source except when new lore contradicts/phases out a bit of the lore.
[Image ID: An email from Dylan Templar at Green Ronin Customer Service that says the following:
Hi Archi,
Generally speaking, everything in our Dragon Age product line needs to be reviewed and approved by Bioware before we can publish it, and we haven't created anything "new" purely for the tabletop game. (although that may change in the future)
There are some inconsistencies that fans have noticed in the past, such as making Duncan being a Warrior because of his access to heavy plate armor, a decision which has been somewhat controversial as his background suggests he might be a Rogue. But what is and isn't "canon" is always a tricky question and depends on the holder of the IP maintaining consistency with the story. Which is not something that Bioware has traditionally been well-known for, even between their video games and expansions... and getting into the comics and novels gets even messier.
Hopefully that answers your question, but let me know if there's anything more I can do for you.
Thank you,
Dylan Templar

So the ttrpg is like any third party medium put out by BioWare. The lore is provided by BioWare, reviewed by someone at BioWare and given the green light. The status it holds in canon lore is dependent, like any other additional media put out by a third party or BioWare, subjected to the whims of consistency in BioWare lore. To be sure I didn’t misunderstand, I asked a follow up clarification question.

Hi Dylan,
Thank you so much for your quick response. I really appreciate it. But just to make sure I understand:
Everything in the tabletop was either provided by or approved by BioWare. The canon/non-canon status is dependent on BioWare in regards to whether it is maintained or falls out of current lore.
Do I have that correct?
Thank you again for your time,
Archi
End of Image Id.]
So going forward, I will keep doing as I have in the past and use ttrpg lore in any lore post, provided it is not contradicted by any new lore.
My blog isn’t about deciding what is or isn’t canon. (Outside of a joking manner.) But providing as thorough and accurate of lore as I can.
To be clear, this means I will also continue to list the ttrpg in the sources should they be used or referenced in my post.
