It's kind of interesting that the god of innovation looks like a dinosaur. Idk if there was any deeper intention behind those design choices besides rule of cool (who doesn't love dinosaurs?) but now I'm thinking, like: Stormcatcher is one of the oldest beings on Sornieth, it makes sense that he looks like an ancient creature, but those aspects of his design take cues from theropods specifically. You know, the things that modern birds evolved from (and still are.) Lightning Flight is all about progress, invention, forward thinking no matter what. Even their region's name, The Shifting Expanse, has more than one meaning: the desert sands shift from one place to another, and these dragons are always adapting their technology and ways of life. So Stormcatcher's design could be interpreted as a bridge between the concepts of "primordial being" and "being of the future". A "missing link", if you will. I think it would be funny if he had feathers.

More Demon Lore: Subspecies, part 1

Imps

Imps are considered "lesser demons" as their true forms are very humanoid, with limited shapeshifting range. They typically have smaller horns, and less magical ability than other species of demon.

Notable imps: Harvey Piggs (An Unexpected Return), Sophia (Exiled), Cheeves.

(Pictured: Fenfire. Note that while he lacks horns, he will use his ability to manipulate fire to make pseudo-horns that rest above his temple. This is to aid in blending in, as Fen chooses to live in Hell fulltime.)

Cambion

Cambion are half-demon and half-human. They are fairly uncommon, as successful demon-human relations aren't the most frequent, and the two aren't compatible genetically. However, like lions and tigers, sometimes a viable pregnancy can be had. The resulting offspring will be intersex, sterile, and have characteristics of both parents - but never has horns. Cambion are offered safe passage through Hell, but can struggle to feel accepted in human or demon society. In extremely rare cases, cambion have been created via other means, like ritualistic transformation, surgically adding demon parts to a human body (or vice versa), or a botched possession leading to the demon host being permanently stuck in the human vessel. There is much debate amongst scholars if these can even count as cambion, but due to still being part demon and part human, they are at least cambion-by-proxy.

Notable cambion: Seth Bill (Billyboy), Donny Graden (Gorge), Augustine Blue (A Demon to Lean On), and Fenfire.

thoughts on Greatwyrm's Breach

From the description of Greatwyrm's Breach: "A mighty break in the eggshell-shaped mountain range surrounding the Pillar, named for its visual allusion to the hatching of a new-born dragon. It is said that its westward gorge housed the first clans, and the intricate series of networked caverns that dot it support this claim. A storied realm for dragonkind, many of the old lairs here are known for their murals and cave-paintings telling of the ancient feats performed by the elemental deities in the shaping of the world."

Maybe the very oldest pieces depict the First Four, then branch out to the latter seven as more dragons start to travel to other flights. Such a huge, ancient, public canvas must be invaluable to the historic record; among other things, the artworks track how attitudes toward each of the Eleven shift over time.

plague funerary practices, abridged

Discussion of death and gore under the cut:

Clans throughout the Scarred Wasteland often place deceased dragons in the pools of digestive juices that dot the landscape. Clans that live near the Wyrmwound take this a step further and bring their dead directly to the great cauldron itself. Those who die near Hellwell Croft get their skulls placed in ossuaries that double as landmarks. Dragons unlucky enough to die in the Abiding Boneyard are rarely ever found, though it's not unheard of for their remains to turn up in some scavenger's collection years after their demise.

Some Plague clans will eat the deceased and incorporate their remains into usable objects (e.g. bone handle knives) to honor their memory, because life goes on even if they cannot. The Rotting Plaguebringer Effigy item description says that it's made with "dragon leather"; I choose to interpret it as leather that, yes, came from a dragon. I also choose to believe that this is a funerary practice.

Rites for fallen Imperials require a team of skilled mortician-priests to carry out. The head, limbs, and tail are separated from the body; Plague magic is used to quickly break down all flesh. The bones are shattered before being cremated, and the ashes are given to the clan of the deceased.

Plague has an excellent record for preventing emperors from forming.
