jack: actually really likes cats the musical, cries at memory every time (he nearly kicked roger out for asking him his thoughts on the movie), once had a bad voice crack during practice and had to bribe maurice into silence about it

roger: cried at the ending of kpop demon hunters, stole something small from a store one time at thought he was gonna go to prison for life

ralph: sleeps with stuffed animals, can name every single type of horse in under 30 minutes, nearly burned his fancy ass house down microwaving a grape

peter: sells candy to the littluns at the nearby elementary school, has made at least $100 already, (once some kid from his school was bullying him and then got beat up by 20 third graders)

sam: knows jack's secret somehow, flushed a pickle down a school toilet once, can sort of skateboard

eric: supplied the pickle, had a small fictional crush on eartha kitt's catwoman as a younger kid, CANNOT skateboard

maurice: really frickin gullible (roger once told him that 78 spiders crawled in and out of everyone's ears every night while they slept and he believed it for weeks)

simon: tried to eat a lizard at 3 years old, lies about having a lot of different common fears to seem normal, once fainted before being able to apologize for accidentally swearing at a teacher (he has not lived it down)

ralph loves lollipops, like those comically big swirly carnival ones

jack likes lemonade, but HATES going to some kid's stand to get it so he makes it himself at home because his parents always forget to buy some for him

roger enjoys ice cream, chocolate and vanilla specifically, always expects his parents to buy him ice cream when they go to the beach, if he doesn't he broods all the way home and then his parents feel sad because their sweet boy isn't talking to them (i think they're very sensitive)

maurice is a cake MENACE. will eat any kind of cake you put in front of him he doesn't care he's immediately digging in, you blink and it's gone and his face is incredibly messy

peter HAAAATEESSSSS candy corn, seethes whenever they're in sight, they disgust him

however, he quite likes mint chocolate

Even though it’s more subtle, Ralph’s home life sounds just- bleak? I don’t know why but hearing how he describes it, it feels more bittersweet and less longing than you would think of from a boy who’s been stuck on an island for months. It just makes me sad for him :[

AND OH BOY- I honestly love how (for the most part) we keep Peter just as smart as he is, and deserves to be. I see characters dumbed down for punchlines, but if anyone should be dumbed down for that, we should just use the airhead of a protagonist we have (/aff). Peter can be a smart-ass, but that’s literally the point, he’s smarter than the other boys but not as physically capable. I just love that he stays true through most things I’ve read, but some people don’t keep him true to his character, and I loathe them. (/hj 😒)

Maurice has a whole ass cake despite it NOT BEING HIS BIRTHDAY

Sam is crying because he got his sleeve stuck in a ticket muncher and Eric is desperately trying to remove the thing.

Peter (Piggy) plays the claw games because he wins every time due to cALcuLatIons (the games are totally rigged and he somehow beats them)

And Robert is so fucking exhausted of babysitting these children

do you think that piggy was bitter and resented ralph for constantly abandoning him (even later in the book when piggy was his right hand man)

YES! yes I really do, and I’d even go so far as to say he is a little pretentious in that nerdy little kid way, so he already doesn’t like most everyone

but that’s the thing, he’s so anti-emotional bc he’s focused on surviving that it’ll never be enough to ever make him turn on Ralph bc he needs him as a talking piece yk, but I’d definitely say so

If we’re being really honest, I don’t view anyone on this island as friends LMFAOOOOOOO

I just think that’s a boring approach tho so I disregard the obvious tension in every relationship and make them a big happy family

but yes Peter fucking hates that guy ac, in my mind he compliments and supports Ralph bc he can’t have him lose hope or else he’s damned too

I think this interpretation also makes sense with the whole intellect thing, bc I don’t think Golding meant to say logic will always be beat out when shit hits the fan, but more so it won’t be enough. But to have that statement, Peter had to have achieved something or have been effective for a short instance, and I think getting Ralph to fully believe in himself, Peter as a friend, and keep fighting was his achievement. It’s a fairly impressive one too, considering how weak Ralph is lmfao
